Story

For over 300 years, The Star Inn has been at the heart of the village of Sparsholt, an idyllic village nestling at the foot of the ancient Ridgeway path with its world famous White Horse and its miles of unspoilt trails.

Housed in a converted barn a stone’s throw away from the main pub, the newly refurbished Star Barn offers 8 en-suite bedrooms, offering twin, double and family accommodation. We had a lovely dinner here for our annual work do. The food was fantastic and all the staff were so attentive and made great efforts to get all the food out in good time. I had the vegetarian Wellington, which was delicious! My husband and I also stayed the night in the barn accommodation. Very comfortable with lovely facilities. We also had a very nice breakfast. Thank you Nes and team! Rooms: Very nice quality facilities. Very comfortable bed. Food & drinks: Very nice quality ingredients and all good home cooked food.
This restaurant has a reputation locally for being expensive, but this is so far from the truth. The prices are extremely comparable with similar establishments close by. Six of us went for breakfast on Sunday last week. We had a fabulous full English, eggs florentine, toast, unlimited coffee and tea etc. On Sunday we tried the Sunday roast. The beef almost melted in the mouth and the desserts tasted amazing. The service was excellent, couldn’t have been any better, thanks Nes & Hayley. We will definitely be going back to try the midweek theme nights.
Amazing food made by a great Chef! Very nice service, too! Some of us had the festive menu and others chose à la carte. Both options were great! If I lived closer, I would visit more often!
I stayed at the Star inn with my wife for 2 nights, as soon as we arrived the staff welcomed us as if we were family. The first evening we ate at the Star and had a lovely meal served by Hew, who was friendly and attentive. I ate the Duck terrine, followed by the slow cooked beef cheek with horseradish mash, it was lovely. My wife had Roasted beetroot with butternut squash and goats cheese mousse, followed by Sea bass, she said it was lovely. The sweets looked amazing but I honestly couldn’t fit one in, and I enjoy my food. Both mornings of our stay we had breakfast, Served by the lovely Ness, who nothing was too much trouble for, also the Chef Ewan came out and checked we enjoyed our breakfast. This couple of days was a lovely treat, would we return to The Star? absolutely!. Thank you to all the staff at The Star for making us feel so welcome.
We stayed at the Star for one night as a treat after Christmas. The service and food were outstanding , a seasonal menu , fabulous wine list and amazing staff . We had the most amazing stuffing scotch egg , Partridge and slow cooked beef cheeks. Breakfast was enormous, it beat both me and mny husband , we should probably have gone for something lighter, but the full english was so tempting. On the night we were there they wer short staffed but you wouldnt know it, the staff were lovely, welcoming and attentive but special shout out to Nes who looked after us brilliantly over dinner and was there bright and early to make sure we were looked after at breakfast as well. The only disappointment was the room, it needed a little uplift. It was clean, quiet and comfortable but just a little tired. I would stay again in a heartbeat however as everything else including the location was just perfect.
Disappointed indeed. Drove miles to have a celebration meal of our special day. They totally forgot about my request for our special day. Definitely overpriced and overrated for a very average pub meal.Rooms: 1/5
Outstanding food and beautiful presentation with no faults at all on that side! Service by no means awful but let down in part by small gestures, no offering more drinks when clearing empty glasses… also lacking a friendly vibe. Quick meal turnaround which is great for some BUT most parties could do with 10 minutes between courses, otherwise it feels very rushed and like we were just there to eat as quickly as possible and leave.
Amazing place to stay for a weekend getaway. Phenomenal food and lovely rooms. Very pleased and will be back. Nes was a star!Rooms: 5/5
We had the most delicious sunday roasts here as a family, all having different dishes. All were cooked to perfection and the sides were also perfect and generous in portion. Service from ness was excellent and atmosphere great. Would thoroughly recommend. Food & drinks: Excellent delicious food
This old Inn is now a top restaurant. Food and service were excellent. The meats cooked to perfection with deep rich sauce. The taste of the terrine was masked by a little bit too much salt, but this was the only issue with an otherwise flawless meal. Expect to spend £30 a head for 2 courses. New winter menu has some excellent desserts
