Very nice pub in the city centre with excellent service and tasty food. The servers were very attentive and I could see them trying hard to accommodate everyone.  I thought the start would have been slightly bigger and the pie’s crust was slightly too hard for my liking but not a disaster by any means and it was busy.  Would come back to try something else.

We have booked a place for dinner on sunday and it was incredible!! The staff was really lovely and we had a lovely ambience with nice music in the evening. I have enjoyed the pies and the drinks. Having a price in the drink list will be better since it was odd to not have a price on the menu. Lovely atmosphere and nice location!Food: 5/5

I can't speak highly enough about this place. The atmosphere is impeccable. The draught selection is excellent. And THE FOOD is the best I've ever had at any pub ever. This was by far our favorite place to eat in Edinburgh. We liked it so much we went back the next day. I definitely recommend going here.Food: 5/5

We had a very enjoyable hearty early dinner on our first day in Edinburgh.  The place looks very nice, with an extremely cozy atmosphere. Perfect for our first few hours in a gothic looking city on a winter dark day!  Personnel is very kind and service fast. We got our starter within minutes. We just waited maybe a few minutes too long to get our beer but after that everything arrived promptly.  I found the soup to be ok, with not much fish. The fish was tasty but the soup instead felt bland. It came with bread that felt a bit too limp and the butter was just too cold to be spread.  Unfortunately I didn't particularly appreciate the beer, but that's probably just me.  The pie instead was superb. Rich and hearty, full of flavor. Generous portion. The gravy also extremely good and a great addition to the accompanying carrots.  I tried the beef pie of my partner and didn't particularly like it, while she found it very satisfying instead.  We both loved the menu and struggled to choose from so many options that caught our attention.  An interesting detail about the menu: calories are called out for each and every dish. I don't think I had ever seen that for such a traditional menu!!  Music felt a bit in contrast with the general atmosphere: a bit too upbeat and modern for a place looking so traditional.

We vacationed on Edinburgh a couple weeks ago and thought the service and food were outstanding! We were told our table would be ready in 40 minutes and to feel free to sit at the bar and have a pint while we waited. Our table was ready in only 20 minutes! Our server was attentive and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The order was perfect and I loved the steak and ale pie! It was my favorite thing I ate during our stay. My husband had the Ocean fish and chips and he enjoyed that as well as the houlloumi fries. The portions were good size and we were stuffed when we left. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place!

This was the first pub we went to while visiting Edinburgh and it did NOT disappoint! Firstly, the service was excellent as the staff were friendly and the food was very quick to come out!  We started off with the Cullen Skink which was amazing! It was our first time trying it but definitely was delicious! We also ordered the Stovies and Sausage and Mash which was also really well prepared!  Overall great atmosphere, great service but there is limited seating, so you will need reservations for dinnertime :

Very old, long established Edinburgh favourite for many. Beautiful  historic,very rustic decor and interior. Great range of drinks  and classic pub dishes. Always busy despite prices not being cheap. Service can be slow  but staff always friendly. A tourist paradise. Gee wilikers Abner isnt it just so quaint. Food: 5/5

Walked into this bar after dinner for a night cap & had a great experience chatting with Tyler the bartender. He was a great beer connoisseur & and explained the different Edinburgh brewed beers. He even shared a personal story about his great grandmother who used to also work at this bar & allegedly saw the ghost of the Bishop, whose throne was buried under what is now the bar area. Great drinks, customer service, & cute cozy bar atmosphere.

We were fortunate enough to get reservations for our group of 6.  An so pleased that we did.  Food was absolutely amazing the pies are divine, and they had live music.  You can tell it is an older bar/ restaurant, it has such a great vibe.  Highly recommend stopping in for a bite or a pint!Food: 5/5
