This hotel was in a perfect location for visiting Battle Abbey. The free parking made everything easier and it was easy to find too. The room family room was very large and spacious with a double and single bed, sofa, TV, wardrobe and 2 bedside cabinets. Bathroom consisted of shower, toilet and sink, again very spacious. It was very clean throughout. The staff were very friendly and informative and made it all a breeze. I paid £72 which I thought was a bargain for what I got. My party consisted of a mum and 2 children 7&10 it was perfect for us. There are a lot of stairs though so may not be suitable for people who struggle.
We arrived early to head to a wedding so the front-desk gave us a key, and looked after our bags for the day. When we returned back to the hotel in the early hours, extremely tired, we found they had kindly placed our bags in the room. The room was spacious, bed was huge and comfortable, and the staff were also incredibly friendly on both days.
We enjoyed our stay here at The George.nOur room was HUGE with a very large window that opened to allow fresh air in and got the morning sun.nA nice big sofa was also present which is a lovely spot to sit in the morning and have your coffee with the sun coming in.nThe bathroom does need a bit of work but is quite usable.nThe gentleman at the front desk was so polite and helpful.nWhat a gem. We were on the second floor and he carried both my mothers and my suitcase up for us which was so kind because mine was very heavy.nI love the staircase here, it has such character.nIts in a good location however the street is very busy but thats not the hotels fault.nThe Italian restaurant down stairs, at the front is a lovely place to have dinner, lovely food and they also do breakfast in the morning from 8am. Very convenient when most things are closed early on a Sunday morning.
Excellent location, the room was nice, everything was clean, and the bed was comfy. Considering it’s half the price of a Premier Inn it’s definitely a better option.nnOne star off as although it was non-smoking some of the rooms do allow smoking, and you can smell the stale smoke through the ventilation system.
I don’t normally write reviews but I was asked to do one by the staff so I will… I was staying at the hotel for a wedding in the town, maybe I was a little too optimistic after reading the quite poor reviews but I will say on first arrival I found the room to be better than expected, it felt relatively updated, you definitely can hear a lot of noise from other guests, in corridors etc, not a lot of sound proofing at all in the hotel which I just put down to it being an old building. However the morning of the wedding I was attending is when the problems started… I went to use the shower and it was scolding, way too hot to use and the temperature valve was just spinning and spinning and the temperature not changing. I called reception for help which they came immediately to take a look and informed me the plumber would need to fix it later in the day and in the meantime I could use a shower in a different room or the shower in the staff accommodation, which my room was right next to. I opted for the shower in a different hotel room however bear in mind the guests of this other room had just checked out so the room had not been cleaned yet. I’d say im pretty laid back with stuff like this and frankly didn’t have time to cause a fuss for another option so I used the shower. After this the staff member came back to my room to tell me the plumber had told him how to fix my shower and would do it when I’m out. I asked if it wasn’t fixable would I be able to check in to a different room but he said no as the hotel was fully booked. The next day the shower had been “fixed”. Still unable to change temperature but he told me he’d set it to a slightly lower temperature, so usable. I will also add my shower or the shower I used in a different room really wasn’t up to normal hotel cleaning standards, lots of limescale etc. So really take what you will from this, in some cases I’d say “that’s what you get for booking the cheapest place in town” but even from the most basic hotels you’d expect a working shower or to be moved into a different room or to receive partial refund for the inconvenience, which I didn’t receive here. Also to add, we asked a few different staff members of local businesses in town what they thought of the hotel and told us the hotel was bought out and run by an oversees company, so if you want to support local businesses you might be better booking elsewhere!
