Sunday late afternoon, 4.45pm Only three tables occupied, greeted and seated quickly, drinks ordered and supplied within minutes. Order taken soon after mushrooms on toast as a starter, followed by a Sunday roast and crispy duck salad...... and then we waited. And waited. A party of three arrived, were immediately seated and their orders taken. They were served with their main meal while we were still waiting for our starter. By the time we were served our main meal they had finished desert! Not good enough, for us, anyway! We have been supporting this restaurant since it reopened because the food is good... and the food IS good. My roast beef was tender, the Yorkshire nice and crisp, the roast potatoes were OK and the veg perfect, with lots of gravy. And the duck wrap with hoisin sauce is delicious. A few weeks ago I complimented the Chef on his offerings, and continue to do so. But it will have to do better than this ..... Oh, and a little background 'easy listening' music would have been good!
We were recommended to try here after fantastic reviews from family. But we were left wondering why we had bothered after waiting for so long for the main courses to arrive. Our starters were quick to the table and delicious. Then came the epic wait for the main course. I had asked for a dish with as little salt as possible and when the dish did arrive it couldn't have contained any more salt if it had tried!! Jill our server was a superstar and tried to organise a replacement meal but instead I just opted for a dessert which was stunning. Another diner was served a sticky toffee pudding cold with cold custard?!! That most definitely is a first with me. In comes Jill to the rescue again! She waved her magic wand and poof there it was the correct heated sticky toffee pudding!! After what was an eventful evening we ended up laughing it off with Jill who had rescued the evening repeatedly. So thank you again. The food that we ate was very good and the staff go above and beyond to sort out any problems that could possibly arise.
Booked here for our Wedding anniversary 5/12/16 My wife had Steak and Ale pie, which she enjoyed but it could have done with a little gravy. Myself had the Battered Fish. This was the worst Fish dish I have ever had. The batter was burnt and completely rock hard, any chef worth his salt would not have sent a dish like this out. I did complain ,and was offered another fish which I refused. To be fair I was not charged for my dish, but our evening had a,ready been ruined. Will not be going back.
I visited today with a friend 19/3/2015.........the place looked lovely and the service was second to none. however, we were not offered a lunchtime menu until we asked for one. on it, there was only a sandwiches. not everyone wants a heavy meal at lunchtime, and I feel that the Duke of Portland should extend their lunchtime menu to more options for people to choose from. what we did choose was very nice, well prepared and served and value for money, but more variety would be nice. perhaps this should be looked into. also, a criticism would be the ladies toilets. I found that considering everywhere else is lovely, the surroundings etc..........the toilets let the place down. there were somewhat grubby and very dusty. I think that should be looked into. thank you. Marlene Straiton
A little pricey menu but very nice place. It won a gastro pub award a few years ago but I think it maybe dipped a little in performance after that. I'm being picky though. Very nice staff. Enjoyable times had there but not quite as brilliant as it used to be.
Very nice establishment where we enjoyed friendly surroundings. The real ale was special and tasted superb, it went down well. The food was excellent we all enjoyed, we will be going back very soon. We would recommend any-time. Peter & Kery
Food and drinks were top notch. Pricey menu but it's top of the range food and definitely worth it. Easily the best food around. Definitely recommend. I shall return.
