Eat before you go. Pub is a lovely vibe and has some good drink choices but the Jerk Valley of London is a let down. Avoid wraps. I loved that the pub offered slushies.nnFood:nnThe only food available at the moment is from the Jerk Valley of London. Not suitable for soya allergy FYI. Overall all of us 3 were underwhelmed. Order at bar via a buzzer which worked well.nnFried chicken wrap 1.5/5. “On par with a Sainsbury’s wrap”nnHalloumi wrap 2/5. “Fine but could do with more of everything - filling and flavour”nnOxtail 4/5. A weekend special. Generous portion and lots of flavournnChips 2/5. Very pale.nnJerk chicken 4/5. Avoid the wraps and go for the standard jerk chicken. So much better
Hidden gem 10 minutes walk from Brixton station. The food is great and the beer garden is absolutely immense
The Duke of Edinburgh — Brixton’s Backyard Burger HavennnThis spacious pub is known for its massive beer garden, laid-back vibe, and comfort food classics. Whether you're here for a casual lunch or a weekend hangout, their burgers and fries are a reliable go-to.nnBurger & chips highlights:nnBeef burgers — juicy, well-seasoned, and stacked with fresh toppingsnChicken burgers — crispy or grilled, often with spicy mayo or slawnVeggie options — halloumi or plant-based patties with flairnHand-cut chips — golden, crunchy, and generously portionednLoaded fries — with cheese, bacon, or jalapeños for extra indulgence
This is a really massive pub with great outdoor space and heating that has friendly staff and a really nice owner. We were recommended a white wine which just tastes amazing so they know what is good.nLots of different food options but unfortunately did not end up eating there. They also have good prices on drinks and happy hour as well!nnThe outdoor venue is a lot different from indoors which creates this amazing duality of being at two different places. Would definitely come back again for some more food and wine.
Brixtonn £6.75 CruzcamponnThe Duke of Edinburgh is located in a quiet residential area in the backstreets of Brixton. The nearest Tube is Brixton, it’s a five minute walk to get here.nnThis pub was originally built in 1874. The pub you see today was built in 1937 by Truman’s principal architect A E Sewell. This pub is Grade II listed and features on CAMRA’s list of pubs with interiors of historic interest, this being of Outstanding National Importance.nnThe decor here is stunning, seemingly it looks untouched since the day the pub was built. At the front is the old Public Bar which has a pool table, traditional pews and its own servery. Head through an open walkway and you arrive into a large wood panelled bar with amazing stained leaded windows. There are some fantastic original features like the ornate fireplaces and the chequered spittoon in front of the long servery. At the back of the pub is a huge sprawling beer garden, I was told this is the largest in South London.nnThe beer selection is all keg and offers a mix of mainstream brews and local craft beers. I decided on a Cruzcampo, my pint was excellent, price point was a little punchy. The food menu is by @bandobelly who combine American, Caribbean and Asian flavours into Burgers and other comfort food options, most Burgers cost £12.nnI arrived just after 12pm on a warm Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub was fairly quiet as it had just opened. I decided to plot up in the front bar area and watch the Olympics, a superb soulful soundtrack played in the background. I got chatting to one of the team who was kind enough to give me a guided tour, what a nice chap. This pub shows live footy, there are plenty of screens here to watch a game.nnI must admit, I am a big fan of 1930’s interwar built pubs, so the @dukebrixton was right up my street. This is a handsome traditional pub with a splendid interior. The beer choice, tasty grub, friendly team and the enormous beer garden make for an impressive pub experience. This is definitely one to visit when in SW9.nnℹ Info correct on visiting 03.08.24
