"We've got everything you need from a country pub near you.The pub's name comes from a local legend of a 'cunning man' - a good wizard who would help protect people from dark spirits and witches. The original building was destroyed following repeated flooding, however the newly re-built pub-restaurant has been impressively restored in its original style - complete with thatched roof. Our menus are full of hearty favourites and country pub classics, as well as our seasonal spring dishes, and we'll be ready with a well-stocked bar, including cask ales, fine wines and British gin to suit very taste - which will taste all the better when enjoyed either in our beautiful gardens or by our crackling log fires. We look forward to welcoming you!"

We went here for Sunday dinner with family it looked like a nice spot and had good reviews. We did book in advance which is probably advisable it was quiet when we arrived at 6pm but that is late for a Sunday! Unfortunately they were out of beef and lamb but had the pork belly which everyone was happy with as I'm not usually a fan of pork belly I went for the house burger instead. Well none of us were disappointed the roast dinners looked fantastic and the pork belly looked amazing as well I was a little jealous! The burger was also lovely the pulled brisket on top was amazing very very tasty! We all enjoyed the food and the staff seemed very nice especially our waitress who bought some water and a treat over for the dog as well! Lovely location with walks near by and the pub itself was a really nice building and nice and comfy with an open fire. Would definitely recommend!
Had an excellent lunchtime meal here. Service was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is appealing. Outdoor bar on a sunny day. Very popular place. The decor suits my taste. An eclectic mix of framed pictures, open fire, fairy lights, fresh flowers and candle on all tables. Highly recommend a visit.
Super good food and fabulous service. We ordered the Roasted Salmon and the Ribeye Steak. The Salmon was nicely cooked and the steak was tender and juicy. The service by Alex was impeccably prompt, attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is cozy, casual, comfortable and intimate. The outside seating is very pleasant especially on a cool summer night. The prices were fair and reasonable for good quality food and service.
The Cunning Man public house is situated in Burghfield next to the River Kennet. This is a truly lovely venue. Plenty of seating inside and outside in the garden. In the summer you can’t beat sitting outside in the sun. Lazy Saturdays or Sundays at the pub in the beer garden with an ice cold drink and some decent food … mmm. The staff are relaxed and friendly. Food arrives fairly quickly given how busy this place gets - it is popular and rightly so. Inside the pub the decor is traditional relaxing with a couple open wood burning fireplaces. Food menu is pretty good, standard fair but enough choice. I hadn’t been here for years and forgot just how good this place is. A proper English pub for sure. Remember to register your car inside when you arrive - it’s free to park they just need to ensure parking is used by customers. Great place. Recommended.
We’ve recently moved to Reading and me being a pub lover, we chose this one to get our Friday drinks. The pub lived to my expectations, it’s a very old looking building, but beautifully lit up in the dark. The interior is also really nice and cozy, with several fireplaces and many little lights. One thing that I wished was different was the music, it was quite an annoying playlist.
Lovely pub, tasty food and great range on their menu. We were moored up nearby and it was a perfect place to have dinner. We came on a busy summer Sunday and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We loved that there was an option to have a mini dessert with a coffee/hot chocolate etc. Would recommend!
It’s a lovely looking pub and as usual, Vintage Inns didn’t disappoint. It’s definitely the best one I’ve been to. We were put at a table right by the fire which was lovely. The waitress was friendly and although the service wasn’t the fastest, they were quite busy so it can be forgiven! The food was great and the festive menu meant I could have a little Christmas pudding : generally great experience and definitely want to come back!
I was just passing the The Cunning Man on a bike ride . it’s next to the River Kennet. This look like a fabulous place to stop lovely venue. Plenty of seating inside and outside in the garden. The staff are relaxed and friendly. Food was amazing Recommended.
Fantastic old building right next to canal so weary walkers may stop for a simple bar snack or meal either indoors or out. Friendly table service. We walked from Theale along the tow path and stopped for a couple drinks and simple bar snacks, portion sizes on the small size but very tasty. Dog friendly. Toilets upstairs need a little maintenance.
I had a really nice meal here with my friend a few weeks ago. The burgers were really yummy and I love how much care and attention they put into my friends dairy allergy. The service was great and the food came out quickly.
