Really love friendly staff and owners. Very helpful when deciding which gin to choose! Really nice decor throughout and the toilets are spotless and very recently renovated. Surprisingly spacious inside, the front bar is small and intimate but the rear bar seating area is much bigger with plenty of seating for a social gathering. The pub attracts all ages and quite often has very respectful quiet students as well as lots of locals outside and in. The pub often has live music playing too. Would highly recommend a visit for this quirky mid terraced local pub.
Great little traditional pub, a hidden gem. Real ale and live music. Enjoyed a great gig by local band, Fusion6
For me, the best pub in Reading for live music. Good beer selection and super friendly landlord. The bands are really not your average - there are other pubs in Reading that do really good music evenings, but these guys have the best musicians I’ve heard outside of a paid gig.
Visited the Retreat for the first time in years at the weekend, it has changed massively and definitely for the better. It still has a great range of beers, but has been refurbished. Brian the landlord was very welcoming, I would recommend this pub to anyone.
We hadn't visited The Retreat for a while so we were very pleased to see the recent huge improvements. This has always been one of the friendliest pubs in the South but it's now also really smart and inviting. We visited on a quiet weekday evening and we were greeted like old friends by people we'd never met before. A exceptional pub!
Good beer, friendly landlord, but tiny. Five real ales on when we visited. Don't get there late on a Saturday.
Excellent venue with nice music setting for the live bands. Always a pleasure visiting with friendly landlord running the pub.
Lovely little place! Amazing bar staff, nice locals and a great selection of drinks.
I've been going to this pub for a number of years. I liked it before the re-fit, but as some else has said, it's been done up very fittingly. On my last visit earlier in the week, we were greeted with a very warm welcome from the staff and other customers alike. We'd been to a couple of other pubs before heading to the Retreat. This was the only one that had the heating on, and it was a nice break from the cold outside. The beer selection was good and well kept too. Looking forward to my next visit.
Excellent accommodation with lovely hosts... Superb Breakfast... All you could ever want... ;
