"Set in the middle of the charming hamlet of Sparsholt, The Star is a handsome 18th century building with a glorious garden next to a babbling brook. There’s also a separate barn which is home to eight lovely bedrooms. The Star has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment of the bar and restaurant, carried out by the team behind Newbury’s Michelin starred restaurant The Woodspeen."

The food was delicious especially the liver pate and the roast beef, excellent wine list sensibly priced house red. The staff were most helpful, polite and charmingly from Turkey to Morocco to Czechoslovakia! The only possible negative could be that the dining area had a wooden floor, smooth ceiling and was quite noisy, perhaps some form of sound insulation might be possible either curtains or something on the ceiling? Overall a very happy lunch time. Parking: Small area in front of the pub and a much larger car park behind.
Get a table booked, best lunch out I’ve had for a while. Lovely spot for Saturday lunch for our party of 6 including two children. 3 of us had cycled 8 miles to get there so was ready for a good lunch! We were not disappointed, it’s a lovely location and the interior is relaxing and comfortable. Nice round table and makes for everyone to join in the conversation. Things started well with two bowls of warm homemade bread, good wine and beer choices available. Adults all had 2 course set lunch menu, collar of pork x 3 and one pollack. Kids had their own menu, enough choice for them. Pollack cooked perfectly, great sauce. Pork was very good, my wife’s had a lot of fat, we highlighted this with out waitress and no issues, my wife was offered another main course as chef agreed there was a lot of fat in her piece of pork. Wife accepted and 2nd piece much better, no fat at all. Needed to order potatoes / chips as not included in mains on set menu, this does grate me a bit as £5 for a small portion of new potatoes seems steep. I’d prefer mixed veg include and slightly higher set menu price. Triple cooked chips were very good indeed. Puddings also good and kids loved the sundaes. Great to have a pub serving really proper good quality homemade food in lovely surrounding. Given Covid I’d not been to The Star for some time and we shall me back very soon indeed. Keep up the great work, I’m looking at dates already for our next visit.
Came here last minute for a Sunday Roast after being extremely disappointed with another pub/restaurant near by. The food was exceptional, and the staff were really friendly. Highly recommend and we will definitely be coming back. Vegetarian options: Had more than one vegetarian option which was great.
We stayed here for one night with an evening in the restaurant. The room was in the barn and although it had obviously been painted recently there were a few rough edges, including some patches of mould around the shower tray, a very old and rather poor electric shower and blocked up shower head. No plughole for the sink, the heating seemed a bit random and out of our control, the TV had no bbc channels. Don't get me wrong the room was nice and we didn't pay a huge amount, but a few small niggles just spoilt the overall effect. The food was very good. Both the breakfast and the evening meal. Not exceptional but very nice.
A wonderful first visit to The Star in Sparsholt this evening. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was the perfect balance of friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, from each of the team. Really look forward to visiting again.Food: 5/5
We had a really great weekend away at The Star Inn. The food was amongst the best we’ve ever had, service fantastic too.
One issue which I will mention shortly which is why I gave 4/5 instead of 5/5. But generally been since the renovation and overall enjoyed it. Great food and atmosphere was quiet and cosy. Had a great evening except for one staff member. Unsure of her name in the black suit but I felt she was very sexist and it’s not the first time she has done this which somewhat ruined what would have otherwise been a 5 star experience. I fully appreciate the comment ladies first but she would take it to another level where she would go around the table and only give menus to the ladies and then go around the table again to give it to the men 2nd. I don’t understand why she cannot give the menus in order of who is sitting at the table as it seemed really awkward. She would only take orders from the ladies first and then the men and make it clear that she is doing that intentionally which makes no sense to me. If she takes the orders from the ladies first and then the gents the food doesn’t get made any quicker! I pointed it out to my wife this evening and she observed and agreed entirely that it seems really unusual she is doing this. I normally agree with my wife what she wants and then place the order on behalf of my wife and this waitress said ‘ladies go first, what does madam want’ and made my wife order. When asking how the food was she would only asked my wife which even she thought was weird. I am unsure who this lady is that works there but Star Inn need to look into this and have a strong word with her as it’s not acceptable to be sexist like that. I am all for ladies first but in situations where it doesn’t change the outcome makes no sense to me and skipping the men just to take the ladies orders doesn’t make any sense. It almost felt like she was trying to make men feel bad for trying to make an order.
The Star, which has always been excellent.. has hit another level of great. The Woodspeen’s acquisition and transformation of the restaurant has breathed new life into the place. A fresh and contemporary vibe with new Scandinavian furniture, designer lighting and a high level of finish throughout. The food is exceptional and the service is faultless! Looking forward to enjoying The Star for many more years to come!
Sadly not a great experience. The food wasn’t hot enough and had to be sent back twice. We needed to keep asking for our drinks to be topped up. Felt very disappointed.
Great food and top friendly service in modernised setting. Great veggie selections and extensive wine list.
