Story

St. Ermin's Hotel is a four-star central London hotel adjacent to St James's Park underground station, close to Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. The Grade II-listed late Victorian building, built as one of the early mansion blocks in the city is thought to be named after an ancient monastery reputed to have occupied the site pre-10th century. Converted to a hotel in 1896–99, it became during the 1930s, through the Second World War and beyond, a meeting place of the British intelligence services, notably the birthplace of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), and where notorious Cambridge Five double agents Philby and MacLean met their Russian handlers.BackgroundThe St Ermin's Hotel in St James's Park, London was originally a horse-shoe shaped mansion block built in 1887–89 to the designs of E. T. Hall (1851–1923). Mansion blocks (high-status, serviced apartments) were first seen in Victoria Street, London in the 1850s and remain a feature of the area today. St Ermin's Mansions was typical in both plan and elevation; Hall employed the fashionable red-brick Queen Anne style for the exterior and grouped the apartments around a courtyard which functioned both as a carriageway and garden for the residents. Four entrances led off the courtyard into the apartments (the two entrances in the side wings still exist in their original form to this day). By 1894 the building appears to have been extended along Broadway as far as St Ermin's Hill.

We absolutely loved St Ermin’s hotel! The location was perfect- a very short walk to the St James station. The rooms were spacious, clean and quiet. Upon arrival they gave my son a “top secret” assignment which he loved. Very family friendly. We also enjoyed the Bee area on the 3rd floor- my son proclaiming it was his favorite part of the trip. We would definitely stay again!
An incredible hotel. The rooms are wonderful, so spacious, quiet and luxurious. But what makes this hotel so special are the staff. They truly are wonderful. Nothing is ever too much trouble, there is always someone on hand to offer assistance and they’re all just so kind and friendly. Can’t wait to visit again!Rooms: 5/5
The staff is very friendly, punctual, and polite. A few minutes walk from the St. James exit from the tube. Great buffet offered at the hotel and the kids loved the bee garden. The history of the hotel is very unique compared to other hotels we've stayed at. A 30 min walk to the London eye, 20 min walk to Buckingham Palace, and a 10 min walk to the St James park. There's also a small playground at the St James Park. Rooms: The rooms are very nice and the beds are comfortable. Nearby activities: Park, london eye, Shrek adventure, Paddington experience, Buckingham Palace, Thames River, pubs, Tube, Theatre, Starbucks. Safety: The hotel always has personal presence in the front. Walkability: Very central location Food & drinks: Great buffet, 24 hour room service, tea time and happy hour daily.
I have stayed in many hotels and St. Ermin’s will easily be one of our favorites. Not only is the location superb but the service has been unbelievable. Our 8 year son that loves history was given a “top secret “ mission where he was able to discover and learn about the history of the hotel during WW2. As a secret agent he even received a special drink non alcoholic at the bar. To say this hotel goes above and beyond is an understatement. Truly have fans for life.
This was a beautiful hotel, the staff was Phenomenal, the Food was Excellent. It’s a short walk to major attractions in the city of London. I would definitely stay here again on my next trip back to London.Rooms: 5/5
The St. Ermin's treated us like royalty even before we got there. We were celebrating our 20th Anniversary and I reached out to set up an arrival gift for my wife. The hotel gave us a delicious cake and bottle of prosecco completely complementary with a nice note to top it off. We were also lucky enough to secure an upgrade because of our Marriott status so the room was huge, for London standards certainly. Every single person greeted us, and made us feel like we were the most important guests ever. The breakfast was delicious and included as a Platinum Marriott member. Amazing location and incredibly beautiful hotel. 5 stars all around.
Room was very quiet with no view. Pretty standard with fluffy robes, safe, tea making facilities, small fridge with free water and chocolate. What I really liked was that it had an ironing board, which I didn't find in other London hotels. Public areas like the tea room, reception, bar area were stunning. Will definitely stay there again. Safety: I felt save at this hotel, even though there were riots going on in the country. Always security at the door. Also a very quiet spot Walkability: Very close to Big Ben, Parliament, and other historic places. Lot's of cute pubs nearby Food & drinks: Definitely stop by the tearoom. They have a very good selection of high quality teas and they let you drink as much as you want. Noteworthy details: The hotel has beehives on the terrace on the 3rd floor, and they make their own honey.
I first stayed here in Oct 2023 and have since stayed here every month for at least 3-5 nights per month while traveling on business. Summary: excellent hotel: staff, location, food are standouts !!! Some details: 1. Room sizes are on the smaller end and a number of the bathrooms have none or very little counter space 2. If you need a bigger room - book one before arriving as complimentary upgrades can be hard to come by. 2. The restaurant staff is one of the best. Friendly, attentive, personal - always welcoming. 3. The buffet - is excellent. And the dinner menu is amazing. So many options for people who prefer vegan. 4. The hotel has no spa, steam room Or sauna which would be nice after walking 15 miles some days. 5. The staff is quick to address concerns when the experience isn’t great. Great job to the staff !!! 6. And location, location, location. Can’t beat it. Rooms: Even the bigger rooms are on the smaller end. So if you need extra space - recommend you book a bigger room. Nearby activities: Super close to everything or a tube stop away. Safety: Great location, staff is attentive and onsite Walkability: You just can’t beat this location. Food & drinks: Excellent breakfast buffet and dinner menu and food is perfect for all. Noteworthy details: Staff at the restaurant are some of the best.
We came to town for a short trip and this was a wonderful hotel experience! They had fun evening, activities and wine every night. One evening we had sushi on the terrace bar, which was delicious. The room was great, they were very accommodating and have a play crib for our baby, and we even got lucky and had to check in early since we had just gotten off a red eye flight this was a game changer! Walkability: We walked to some of the big touristy sites, and plenty of shopping and food in walking distance Food & drinks: The food upstairs at the restaurant was delicious! We had sushi and it was great!
My wife and I had a great experience there. The staff was great. Alice, I think the concierge, was terrific! The bar staff helped us order room service because the food had shut down for the night. And they made great drinks! The room was small in comparison to US rooms, but it was perfect. The bed and pillows were excellent. They did allow early check in for us thanks to our Marriott status. It was going to be 200 lbs for early check in. Many of London's highlights were within walking distance. Overall it was a great experience!
