St Athans Hotel

About

A proudly simple, family-run green budget hotel in the heart of London

Story

The St Athans Hotel is a simple and clean budget hotel in Bloomsbury, central London. We offer great value for money, a friendly service and provide a comfortable home from home in a convenient location.

We are a 5 minute walk away from the British Museum, the University of London and the British Library; and also only short bus rides (or 20-30 min walks) from the shops, theatres and night spots of London's West End, as well as Camden Town.

The Geyer family has been running the St Athans Hotel for almost 50 years. We recognise that there is a demand for clean, basic and inexpensive accommodation and we fulfil these criteria while adding friendliness and a bit of character into the mix.

I think it's important to research and read reviews ahead of time so that you know what to expect. I have stayed at this hotel several times. While I wouldn't want to stay for an extended amount of time, it's fine for a few days. £75 per night in Central London with a 5 minute walk to Russell Square station is an excellent value. The staff were all very friendly and are available 24 hours a day. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable, actually better than the higher priced chain hotel I stayed in before coming here. The rooms are small and basic, but this is clearly stated. There is a lot of noise from the street and the walls are thin between rooms, so it might be worth it to ask for a room on the back side of the building. Bring earplugs. The stairs are narrow and uneven also clearly stated so if you have big luggage or have mobility issues, this might not be the best place for you unless you can get a ground floor room. The bathrooms are shared for most of the rooms some en-suite rooms are available, and I never had to wait. They are clean and updated. Water pressure in the shower wasn't great, but the water was plenty hot. I think some of the rooms have TVs, mine didn't, but might want to ask for a room with one if it is important to you.
I would definitely stay here again! The staff were super friendly and the location was perfect. It was a short walk to a number of museums train/underground stations, bookshops and cafes, around 15 minutes to picadilly circus on the underground and around 10 minutes to London Bridge on the underground. I was able to walk up to Camden and down the canal on my trip. The room was clean and comfortable and I was bit worried about the shared bathroom but it there was never any issues with it and it was always clean and well stocked.
Great hotel experience!!! Many sights in London are within walking distance, and there’s many coffee shops across the street that are great in the morning! room was small but super clean and cozy, the bed was made by the staff every day which was such a nice touch. Communal bathrooms weren’t a problem at all. The staff was incredibly welcoming, attentive, and kind as well, as soon as we arrived they helped us sign in and they asked us about where we’re from. They also gave us great tips on local things to do which was so great!
I greatly enjoyed my four night stay at St. Athans Hotel in July of 2024, and view it as one of my favorite experiences in London. This is especially remarkable in light of quite reasonable price that I was charged, and it is due to the character of the building, and those who have worked on it. To me, modern hotels all feel the same, but St. Athans has historicity, and one can tell that love has been put into it throughout the years. This is evident through the art found throughout the premises, and via the obvious effort to maximize modern comfort in a rather old building. The result is that I did not feel that my novel experiences in London were put on hiatus every night as I passed through the doors of a building that can now be found anywhere on Earth, but they continued as I spent each night sleeping in a room that had been constructed in a different time and for a different people. In addition, I found the location to be highly desirable, especially for those who are primarily interested in visiting museums while in London. I was able to walk out the front door every day, and made minimal use of any kind of transportation. The British Library and British Museum were both highlights of my trip, and within easy walking distance. But even if you have to go further, the public transportation in London was far more convenient than I am used to, and I never had a problem getting to where I wanted to go. However, it is important that any prospective guest does carefully review whether the building can meet their expectations and purpose. St. Athans is very forthcoming about the limitations of their building, so do visit their website and read up on what they have to say. While none of the following was an issue for me, something might be a deal-breaker for others: My one-bed room was snug, but that was something I actually enjoyed. I did not have a shower or toilet in my room, but I did have a sink, and I showered at night in the joint bathroom, so I never had to wait. The shower was not particularly great in terms of temperature regulation or pressure, but it was fit for purpose. Most importantly, while I am fortunate to have no current physical limitations, my room was on a higher level, and the stairs were narrow and curved, which would have made it nearly inaccessible to people with mobility issues. A big thank you to everyone at St. Athans for being a significant part of a wonderful trip for me!
We arrived without a booking hoping for a comfy place to stay for the last leg of our trip, and were immediately accommodated. The artwork, maps and friendly staff make this a unique spot to stay and we loved the lounge. Location is close to train & lots of bookshops and cafes. Simple and reasonably priced :Rooms: 5/5
Location is the biggest reason why we chose this hotel. A lot of cool spots within walking distance. I was traveling with 2 almost-teenagers younger kids might have been tough here. We had a wonderful experience. Staff was brilliant. Rooms were enough space. The shared restrooms worried me when I booked, but weren’t a problem at all despite us all being massively jet lagged. Would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone.
Clean rooms, hostel feel. We had a double bed plus bunk beds with private bath. Tiny shower, no latch on the bathroom door. Sparse furniture. Staff is friendly but be ready to ask for more coffee and water for the kettle. We lost cold water one morning, whole hotel. Would consider again but without kids. Rooms: Small, sparse, be ready to make your own bed. Walkability: Lots of good food nearby, tube not far.
The hotel in itself is perfectly fine. But, I payed for two nights, and while I was visiting the city the day after the first night I got kicked out of my room. It was the computer's mistake, and when they saw I payed for two nights they immediately gave me my stuff and the room back. So I don't really mind this misunderstanding. BUT in the process of emptying the room they threw away not only my toothbrush but also empty cans that I stored carefully in the cupboard. I understand that it seems to be trash but they're exclusive to the UK and I intended to keep them as souvenirs and they were clean. I don't think it's acceptable to throw away anything that the client didn't put in the bin themselves, unless it's very obvious dirty trash. I'm very sad that I lost these cans and it kind of ruins the until-now great experience I had with the hotel.
A no thrills hotel with confortable beds and wonderful water, pressure and temperature in the shower even though it’s small. Sent an email ahead and requested the ground floor as I have mobility issues the stairs. Walking distance to coffee and shops as well as Kings Cross and Saint pancreas train stations. Walking distance to the British museum.,10-15. We also walked to the national portrait gallery, which was 30 minutes but a lovely walk. Closest tube is Russell Square. Approx time to the tower of London is 15 minutes and to Camden is 10 to 12. Would stay here again.
I was really impressed. The room was small, but was nicely decorated and felt modern. Although it's a shared bathroom, it was a decent size with a good shower. It's more like an 'ensuite' down the hall rather than a hostel style shared bathroom. Great place, will definitely stay here again in future.Rooms: 5/5
