Spencer Arms

About

The Spencer Arms, Cawthorne was built in 1720 and is now one of South Yorkshire's best Gastro-Pubs located in this beautiful village (listed in the Domesday Book) at the foot of the Pennine Hills.

Story

The Spencer Arms, Country Pub & Restaurant is set in the picturesque, village of Cawthorne. We have a passion for fabulous food and we constantly evolve our menus and dishes to reflect the best of seasonal produce.

We are proud to source meat and produce locally; all our meat comes from Cannon Hall Farm, including our own secret receipe, handcrafted sausages, plus many of the fruits and herbs have been harvested right here from our very own garden.

We have expanded our entire menu, offering more fish dishes, more choice for our vegetarian diners, an ever changing 'mid-week specials' board and even a delicious selection of nibbles and grazings to accompany our range of fine wines and hand pulled real ales.

We have a lovely beer garden, for dining and drinking and a brand new private function room, called 'The Baarn', where we can hold any kind of event for up to 35 people dining or 50 people partying!

Lovely place - excellent service, fabulous menu...the best meal out I've had in a long time. I had ham hock terrine for starters, then lamb roast followed by creme brulee. Our party of 4 also shared a cheese board. We all had a really great time, would definitely recommend.
What a lovely place. We stopped here after a 115 mile journey to rest and recover before travelling back and I can say that I enjoyed every minute here. Everyone was so friendly and nothing was too much of a bother. The menu was refreshing as there were plenty of alternative food choices all of which sounded delicious. I had pulled pork spring rolls as a starter and they were really tasty, would have like more but that's because they were very good. The duck for main was really tasty, cooked a bit more than I'd like but the flavour was enjoyable and the jus that went with it was wonderful. The indoor and outside seating areas are lovely and all have parasols to provide shade should you want it. Dog friendly and pleasant views all around. I have already mentioned it but the staff were fantastic. If I'm ever up that way again I will certainly be coming back.
Didn’t manage to get photos but a lovely place. Really great atmosphere, I had the vegetarian tagliatelle which was really disappointing hence the 4*s. However the other guests I went with really enjoyed their food and I think maybe I just chose an average dish; there was no seasoning and it was really bland for the price of it, I had to season it with salt and pepper about 4 times and it still didn’t seem to make a difference. Either way the staff were friendly and the restaurant was decorated lovely. Wish I’d had something else!
Lovely pub, in a beautiful village set near cannon hall country house. Food and ale are delicious. Staff are friendly and attentive, and very busy lot of the time. Good atmosphere, highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Grilled steak sandwich and a pint was exactly what i needed after a 6 mile walk through the hills and woods of the surrounding countryside.
Wow, what a disappointment! Booked dinner at the Spencer Arms for my wife and I, the menu certainly looked appetizing. The bar was crowded and noisy, the restaurant appeared fairly full with a few free tables scattered here and there. We both chose the carpaccio of beef fillet for starters £11 each, the Spencer's British coast platter sharing meal £19.95 for mains, and the Spencer cheese board to finish the meal with. To be fair, the starter was tasty, but the portion size was very small for its price. The main course just failed to deliver anything that was described. We were served three small pieces of battered fish on a bread board with three massive door wedges of bread from a baguette? There was no butter to relieve the dryness of the bread. A very small portion of French fries, what looked like a shrimp cocktail wrapped in a sliver of cucumber, and a small bowl of battered balls of something unidentifiable. The fish batter was so oily that it completely disguised the flavour of the fish inside. It could of been a nice batter but it was fried at the wrong temperature and then overcooked so that the fish inside was mush. No sign of the advertised crispy calamari and the Norwegian prawn perhaps that's what the balls were?, and the "crayfish" cocktail was most likely shrimp. The two tiny bowls of tartar sauce and mayonnaise were insufficient and practically tasteless. Overall, a pretty meager offering as a sharing platter that barely fed one person, never mind two. The cheese board - presentation left a lot to be desired. Thrown together on a side plate, with not much thought. The butter was so hard that it couldn't be spread on the crackers. The cracker breads were very plain and unexciting. Three of the advertised cheeses were noticeable by their absence. £50.95 for two not including drinks... Value for money? Absolutely not. Parking: Large car park to rear of the pub, with Disabled parking.
Really excellent food. The service was very good. They couldn't have been more helpful.Food: 5/5
Stayed over in our campervan, the pub is very nice all the staff are really friendly, the food was one of the nicest meal we have ever had. Will definitely return when in that area again would recommend.Food: 5/5
Only called in for drinks on our dog walk but had a lovely outside seating area in the sunshine. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Really clean toilets. Beautiful establishment.
Really nice Gastro Pub... Nice staff, good service, lovely food... Definitely worth visiting
Absolutely wonderful evening on the Thursday steak night. It is the best deal around for miles no hidden extras and a huge 10 ounce sirloin steak cooked to perfection with all the trimmings including a choice of sauce. Absolutely delicious accompanied by a full 75 CL bottle of excellent house red or white or Rosie. Top marks to everyone For a brilliant night!
