Sangye! A Sanctuary for the Body and Soul Practicing yoga at this studio has been a deeply transformative experience, rooted in more than just movement. The teachers Phil and Cat are a powerhouse team, each with years of experience and unwavering devotion, weave Buddhist philosophy into their classes, reminding us that yoga is as much about the mind and spirit as it is about the body. The vinyasa flows are guided by carefully chosen music that elevates the practice—sometimes soothing, sometimes invigorating, always perfect for the moment. If you are a beginner or long-time yogi you will find a practice for you, even Mysore, where we witness morning sun streams through the windows, bathing the space in golden light; there’s an undeniable sense of serenity at Sangye. What makes this place truly special is the community. It’s a gathering of kindred spirits, sharing space and energy, supporting each other’s growth. Stepping into the studio feels sacred, like entering a place of worship—not a church in the traditional sense, but a sanctuary where the divine within us is honored. Every class is a reminder of connection: to ourselves, to each other, and to something greater. This studio is more than a place to practice; it’s a spiritual home.
I first came across Cat’s teaching nearly 10 years ago thanks to a recommendation from my then roommate in Brazil. This first experience came in the form of an unforgettable yoga and snow retreat in Japan. I had started practicing yoga intermittently a little less than a year before, but the teaching with Cat felt different. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at the time. The classes were not always immediately enjoyable, they were tough, I sweated, a lot. There was no hiding at the back or checking out in child’s pose and some of the class perhaps 5-10% felt physically beyond where I was with my practice at the time, but somehow, I kept coming back. There was an undeniable almost addictive allure in feeling pushed to my own limits but not aggressively and never beyond accompanied by Cat’s unique sense of humour, her deep knowledge of Buddhist teachings and practice, and an overriding sense of feeling safe and supported, not just by the teacher but also the Sangye community – the other students and retreat participants, many of whom have now become close friends over the years. Every time I came through London, I would always make time to drop in for one of Cat’s famous weekend classes, and now that I have moved to the UK despite living in East… they have become an essential part of my life in the capital. I was thinking recently about what exactly it is that keeps bringing me back to Sangye, and I have come to the simple conclusion that it is the only yoga class where I have ever felt truly “taught”. Cat is a teacher in all senses of the world. Her classes are never just a list of asanas set to hipster music although her music taste IS also great, but she breaks the movements down to their simplest elements and with her deep knowledge of anatomy and a seemingly sixth sense for each individual’s physical limits and potentials, gently encourages you to build your practice from the ground up in a such way that, while the classes are some of the most challenging I have ever taken, no one in the room ever feels left behind. She applies the same approach to her sharing of Buddhist teachings, based on her lived experience and extensive and ongoing research in Tibetan Buddhism. The overall effect is a genuine holistic and nourishing experience for the body and mind, which, in my experience, is unparalleled in the world of yoga.
Cool people , good energies and excellent teachings in a very chilled environment. But also if you’re looking to go a bit beyond your asana practice this is the right place. The studio itself is clean, spacious, modern and bright and the teachers are some of the most chilled out people I met, with years of experience behind them. I loved it from the first class and anytime I’m in London I’m looking forward to go back there! Thank you Phil Douglas, Cat Alip-Douglas and all the staff. Not to be missed.
Studio with a soul and integrity. If you are serious about yoga - Sangyé has everything to help you grow your practice, whether you are just starting lucky you, to start there or have been practicing for years. Hard working teachers - to serve their students better, to grow their own practice to be able to teach better; community of students, ready to help you, nice facilities. Sangyé regularly runs workshops and events, watch out for the updates on their website and FB page. I stepped into Sangyé Yoga School first time in 2016, during brief family weekend in London, and been so many times since - sometimes making plans to come to London just so that I could come back for a class or as many as I can make in a short time I am in London.
I genuinely believe this is the best yoga school in London, and possibly beyond. I’ve been practicing here for the second year now, and Cat is an amazing teacher. Absolutely love it here!
I've practiced at Sangye Yoga since 2013 and am a very loyal student of Cat's. The studio has been of refuge. Cat's classes are demanding, fun and mentally stimulating. The way she challenges you reminds me of the way a coach helps bring out the best in you. On a physical level its been very valuable cross training to running/swimming/cycling for me. But, as I've grown older, it's really the mental practice that keeps me coming!
I have been attending Sangye school for a very long time i think more 8 years. Sangye became quickly a second home. the sense of community and togetherness created in sangye by Cat and phil the owners is unprecedented. in fact I don't think there is any other school here in london that created that sense of home community a place of true practice. yoga is unity in body and mind not a physical exercise only that is a consequence. yes there are good places around with great visiting teachers. Here Cat and phil are integral in the teachings from Challenging asanas to being generous in giving out the vast knowledge in the yoga philosophy in particular buddhism. every month is set with a theme that is somehow cleverly integrated into the practice and that one can take with them outside the mattress to everyday life. last month was mind training and this month is generosity. the experience and diligence is top at sangye and the choice of their teachers like emily, danni, melody antonia is of very high quality encompassing the same values. Cat gives 300 percent of herself to her teaching and sangye. and expects also hard work. she is challenging both in her asana practice and in mind practice. IT IS THE BEST place no doubt.
Simply the best! The level of professionalism, authenticity and community at Sangye far outshines any other studio I have ever been to. Each teacher has their own unique style so it is worth trying a few to find the right fit. All of them are experienced, kind, professional, fun and willing to go the extra mile. If you’re new, do let them know so they can keep an eye out for you! Thank you to all those who make this wonderful studio possible
The best yoga centre I know. Amazing, honest and deeply knowledgeable teaching. Never regret being here and always feel moved and moving after sharing time with the people in this studio. Thank you Cat and Phil.
I discovered Sangye Yoga School two years ago, and since then it has become a second home and a family, to the point that i travel monthly to London only to practice in person in the studio i live outside UK and i haven't found yet another studio able to offer the same deep experience as Sangye does. It is a very welcoming and inclusive place with an amazing and supportive community of students and inspiring teachers. Cat and Phil are incredibly generous, fully dedicated to the studio, they share all their long experience and deep knowledge through practices that are physically challenging and mentally enriching. Don't miss this chance, you will never regret!
