One of London's hidden gems! Built in 13th century, it has withstood The Great Fire of London 1666 and the hurricane of 1703 when Wren was told every steeple in London would have to be rebuilt re hurricane damage he proclaimed "Not St Dunstan's, I am sure". His confidence in this 4 storey Gothic structure was not wrong. As today it is the steeple, tall pinnacles and buttresses that remain intact today. Sadly or fortunately, depending on your outlook, it was bombed in WW2. In the early 1970's the towered steeple and medieval nave walls were turned into an almost fairytale like tranquil garden.
It would be harsh to describe St Dunstan in the East as a derelict church, more helpful would be to call it a tiny garden, inside the remains of a former church. The current structure was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the aftermath of the great fire of London. It survived almost 300 years before being hit by a bomb. The Tower is intact. Inside the space is a circle of benches , some people were resting there with a collection of suitcases and a wedding party turned up for some photos. There are a couple of very bold squirrels there. For a moment of peace from the nearby tourist spots, this is a good choice
A hidden gem nestled amidst the bustling streets of London. Stepping into its ancient ruins feels like entering a secret garden, where history and nature intertwine in a captivating embrace. The centuries-old walls, adorned with climbing ivy and vibrant foliage, create a hauntingly beautiful backdrop for reflection and contemplation.
A lovely secluded ruined old church with an open roof and overtaken by nature trees and shrubs. Well tended to gardens but some trees like the kiwi have overtaken the apparent more historical fig tree which holds a plaque. The site is smaller than expected but beautiful and very peaceful. There are some lovely trees and squirrels to see bounding branch to branch and scurrying up the ruins. Some lovely seats to while away the time , take some peace or medation moments or have a peaceful picnic.
Beautiful church ruins taken over by nature. The tower is all that remains. A great place for a secluded break in the city. Lots of people taking pictures after a wedding when we went!
On the face of it "a ruined Church" may not sound an exciting visit. But please if you're in the area and particularly if it's a sunny day make an effort to go. It's a wonderful relaxing place, to have your packed lunch, sit & comtemplate life. While it's simply very pretty.
Incredible ruin, refurbrished by Mr. Wren in 935AD. A tranquil inner tract with a hole what seems to have been a well. A picturesque place to take photographs, sit in a quiet and enjoy watching squirrel chase or birds or the sky.
Such a beautiful bit of history to see. The church garden is stunning and so peacefully quiet even though you are in the middle of a city. Definitely a must see if you love old architecture and want to feel as though you are stepping back in time.
Wow. A superb bond of nature and structure. A unique inspiring place. You can feel the calm and the power of the place. A definite must visit not to be missed.
Quite beautiful and peaceful, especially among the busy city. Small but worth the visit. There were a handful of mini photoshoots going on which were slightly difficult to avoid. Overall, lovely stop if you're passing by.
