This cottage is steeped in history which is as pleasure. It's also such a joy to stay somewhere which is not decorated in a bland and unmemorable way. We loved it!

Although I'm writing this review more than a year later, I was prompted to leave my comments here now, as I seek another cottage as lovely as this, for an upcoming trip to the UK. When I visit the UK, I like to stay in historic places, places filled with charm, character, antiques and otherworldliness, yet so many holiday cottage offerings are modern, sterile and leave me uninspired. But Priory Cottage ticks all these boxes! It's very ancient, and is thought to have been the guest apartment for the 12th century priory; top marks for historical interest! Tastefully and comfortably furnished, the atmosphere transports residents to another time while providing every modern convenience. It's not squeaky clean, but that's okay. The building is ancient, so it can hardly be expected to be free of a little dust on the beams. Linens and bedsheets were crisp and clean, and the air was fresh, so we were very satisfied. It took a night or two to get used to the chiming of the bells from the church tower every quarter hour (with entire hymns being played on the hour ... all night long)! Beyond the initial jokes about Quasimodo, we found that the sound of the bells only added to the feeling of having been transported to another time, and it became a delightful soundtrack for medieval dreams ( we were also invited to sit in on a bellringers' practice - a real thrill). The cottage is situated in the heart of this wonderful city - near enough to walk to delightful pubs and shops, to the NT's Dunster Castle, to the pretty parks and beyond, to prehistoric hill forts, the medieval clapper bridge, the old mill, and miles of scenic countryside and woodland walks. The pretty private garden (shared with the owner, who is a talented gardener) may have been part of the priory cloister, at one time. It's a peaceful little oasis, and provides an idyllic buffer from the hustle and bustle of the village. If you seek something out of the ordinary, a million miles from the Holiday Inn experience, Priory Cottage will not disappoint.

Truly medieval, yet cosy and practical, in the very heart of Dunster with a beautiful garden. Close to footpaths in the fantastic Exmoor region, close to sandy beach (in Minehead).
