Luttrell Arms Hotel

Story

The Luttrell Arms in Dunster, Somerset, England was built in the late 15th century and is located in the centre of the medieval town of Dunster. The building has been designated as a Grade II* listed building since 22 May 1969. The original building has been enlarged over the years by addition of further wings. It is now used as a hotel.HistoryThe Luttrell Arms occupies the site of three ancient houses recorded from 1443, when two of them were conveyed to Richard Luttrell by William Dodesham. There is no indication as to the age of these houses at the time, or what part, if any, they take in the building we see today. The building was formerly a guest house for the Abbots of Cleeve Abbey.ArchitectureThe Luttrell Arms is a Grade II* listed building and was constructed in the late fifteenth to early sixteenth centuries, with some later additions and alterations. It is built of rubble stone with a slate roof. The original part of the house consists of three storeys, while the porch, at the centre of the front, is two storeys high. Wings of lower height were added to left and right at later dates, and a wing at the rear of the main part once served as the hall. The main doorway has a carved stone heraldic emblem above the outer door opening, moulded stone copings and a saddle stone at the gable. The windows on the main wings are sash windows with glazing bars, mostly single width, but double width to the right and left of the porch. The leaded casement-type windows on the porch have moulded stone mullions. The interior features include a four-centred stone door frame, an oak door frame, an open fireplace, large moulded oak ceiling beams and exposed rafters. A ground floor room has a seventeenth century plaster ceiling and an upper floor room has an open roof of timber with moulded arch braces and purlins.

We stopped for some impromptu lunch on a Saturday. The atmosphere in the pub is lovely, old worldly style. The food was excellent, the pork belly burger was superb. Well Presented and tasted great. The servers were all friendly and very helpful. Toilets were clean and well presented. We were lucky to get in as there were many pre booked, but as we were early enough it worked for us. Will return and do recommend.
Beautiful pub which I have visited for many years. The staff are always friendly, and food is always very good. We normally choose to sit in the bar area as it has a great atmosphere and style, but on our most recent visit we sat in the dining area which was excellent too. Slightly quieter, which is easier for conversation.Rooms: 5/5
We came in from the rain and received a very warm welcome from all staff. Was warm and cosy with the fires burning. Had plenty of space to hang our wet coats. Food was delicious and we all agreed how much we enjoyed our meals. The Mussels were fantastic. Staff here really made it, friendly and attentive.
Gorgeous bar, walked up to the secret garden which was beautiful with stunning views. Refreshing drinks. Very lovely and friendly staff will be coming back.Service: 5/5
We stayed here for Valentines Day. The room was beautiful and we adored the view to Dunster Castle. We had a colour changing jacuzzi bath which was an added bonus we weren't expected. We had a fabulous time and would definitely recommend a stay here. Rooms: Room was exceptionally clean and beautifully decorated. Great views out of two different facing windows. Jacuzzi bath. All we could have wished for. Relaxing and romantic.
So very average and disappointing. A lovely restaurant setting and fantastic staff, the food really let the whole place down. Expensive yet bland and unimpressive. As a family of four we all had starters and mains. Not one of the dishes was what you’d expect for the price. Scotch eggs were pleasant but absolutely not worth £12 - have had similar standard homemade scotch eggs in other pubs for half the price. Chicken wings were good. The spiced lamb burgers were the worst of the dishes. Flavourless and quite frankly boring. Homemade pie was nice but a lot of the thick cut chips were raw in the centre.
The beautiful decor of this pub unfortunately did not compensate for overpriced, cold food, nonexistent service and general chaos we experienced on Easter Sunday. The pub was clearly unstaffed and disorganised. We had to queue at the bar to order our food and drinks, despite it clearly being a sit-down pub, while one staff member remarked 'it's just one crisis after another here'. The food came quickly, but the portions were tiny my £16.50 sausage roll was the same size as a £2 Gregg's equivalent, they didn't taste of much and weren't hot. It was cunning of them to ask that we pay upfront, because we might well have refused the full amount otherwise. In summary: it's a place with great potential but clearly in need of better management!
We only dropped in for a spot of lunch with friends. They don't have a lot of room so to be sure you should book at busy times. Food was nice but the drinks were very expensive, and I'm from London! Anyway good location a very short stroll from the car park. A nice old place in the main high street with good character. Food & drinks: Nice food, expensive drinks.
Good, well served local Ale. Nice menu. Had the pie of the day option. Chips were excellent. Choice of veg a little bizarre. Historic building and pleasant staff.Service: 4/5
Had amazing stay under the celebration package. All the staff were polite and nothing was to much trouble. Dinner was excellent as was the breakfast. Thank you Daniel and the team for making our day so special with plenty of memories. The dog loved all the attention and it is a very dog friendly place.Rooms: 5/5
