About

Story

Take to two wheels, relax on a beach or try a spot of badger watching at YHA Minehead. A country retreat in an attractive house high in Somerset’s Exmoor hills, perfect for a weekend break or family get-together. Enchantingly situated in a woodland hideaway, YHA Minehead has bags of charm. Could fairies live at the bottom of the garden? With grounds as magical as this, we wouldn’t put it past them.

Not only is Minehead a picturesque seaside resort with a cracking sandy beach, it’s also the northern gateway to the National Park, the area’s largest town and the start point of the South West Coast Path (SWCP) – the nation’s longest long-distance walking trail. For activity breaks, the nearby tracks are great for mountain biking and cycling holidays, while walkers can enjoy the South West Coast Path. Don’t miss the medieval village of Dunster - a lovely short walk away.

As National Park’s go, Exmoor is one of the most peaceful. A wander around its heather-clad moorlands, along its dramatic coastline or around its sheltered bays promises the ultimate distraction from life’s day-to-day woes.

We booked it exclusively for a family holiday for 3 days. A perfect getaway, beautiful grounds and surroundings. It’s quite remote, perhaps feels more so than it actually is but a car is certainly needed. Facilities are fine, plenty of living room and good sized kitchens. Minehead is a lovely smallish town with beautiful sandy beaches and beautiful hilly setting.
What a lovely hostel. I've stayed there twice, 2014 and 2023. The hostel has been maintained well and looks to have been freshly painted. The only problem is the chimney hadn't been clean so we could not use the log burner. Very disappointed considering it was January.
Lovely hostel, very clean. Good shared kitchen facilities fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, cookers/hobs & plenty of plates/pans/glasses etc, lounge and dining area. Bathrooms were clean and mostly modern. Heating worked well. Location is a bit out the way but we knew that, but make sure you go prepared! No lights up some of the track either so take a torch if you plan a walk in the evening. The track is a bit shoddy so drive slow! No issues sharing on our visit but it was quiet, not sure how it would be if full. Improvements - Some benches outside for sunny days. The green light that stays on all night assuming for health and safety is far to bright and kept me awake - Eventually created a den in the bunk beds to resolve this, but ideally the light could do with being much dimmer if it has to be there. 30 minutes walk into Minehead, and walks all around in the woods. O2 network didn't work, not even for phone calls, and the WiFi was intermittent, so bear this in mind if you need to be connected all the time.
A bit off the beaten track and the mobile signal was patchy to say the least. Be prepared for a fairly long walk before you are able to get a decent connection. Other than that I enjoyed my stay. Rooms clean and comfortable and the members kitchen is well equipped with good facilities for those who are self catering. Thank you.
Lovely place to stay for my family of four. Very comfortable and the self-catering kitchen was good. A bit out of the town, but that suited us perfectly. Very welcoming staff - the warden even lent us a map. Lots of walking on the doorstep of the hostel. We walked to Duster Castle, through the woods. Would happily stay there again.
We stayed here a part of a private booking so can't comment on the usual warden service. The hostel was spotlessly clean, and we were all asked to bring slippers or thick socks to wear inside. The lounge is not quite big enough for a private hire if you all want to be together in the Evening and the dining room would struggle too, but the hostel is great, in a fantastic location right in the forest. Parking is limited to 8 cars near the hostel, but space for more slightly away.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms and toilets were clean. They serve food and have a self catering kitchen. I stayed here, just me and my 4 year old daughter. I felt completely safe. It does help to have a car, the car park is right next to the hostel. I will definitely stay here again. Thank you to everyone xx
A beautiful setting tucked right in amid the trees of the national park. The hostel is spotless and the staff very friendly. It is not very large nor especially well soundproofed it is an old building so noise from the communal areas on the ground floors carries up to the bedrooms on the first floor.
This is an absolutely brilliant and really quaint hostel. I've had really good experiences with YHA and this is no exception. Fantastic views, gorgeous woodland for hikes and runs and a really comfortable place in general. Kitchen and dining room facilities are plenty and the bedrooms were clean and spacious.
This hostel is set right away in the middle of a wood. All I could hear when I arrived in April was the sound of a cuckoo. Delightful. It is clean and cheerful. It is a bit difficult to park there as it is reachable by a unsurfaced track up a tight steep turn, so it might be best to leave the car at the bottom of the slope, then it is easier to go somewhere in the car when you need to. I usually find this hostel has beds when others are booked up, probably because it is quite remote but not far from Minehead, just a tad inaccessible. So best not to bring your vintage car :. It is good to use as a base to explore Exmoor. The staff were helpful and friendly during my visit and I will be returning again in the summer
