This is the end of my fourth week of six weeks of treatments and I can say without hesitation the staff in here are fantastic. They genuinely care and always have time for you. No one tries to rush you out if you have questions. Only complaint would be the prices in the shop/cafe.
I’ve appreciated all the care during My ,Radio Therapy sessions since May13th.The treatment I received, from. polite and dedicated team members was very good,Thank You. Trevor Cobden
Where do we start. Mum was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer early 2023. Her treatment was delayed as they lost internal mail. She started treatment chemo/radiation and she tolerated it quite well. She started a trial drug and immunotherapy. It was here that her health started to deteriorate but although presenting several times she was ignored even though she had collapsed on the bathroom floor and couldn’t walk unsupported. They sent her home with laxatives?nEventually they did some active observations and found her oxygen sats were in the low 80’s when mobile. She was admitted 8/9/23. A scan showed she had an infection in her lung. They started antibiotics and she was told she would get oxygen support when needed. Family had noted over the weekend that she wasn’t responding as hoped and approached the nursing team. When challenged why she wasn’t getting oxygen they claimed they were unaware that she was SOB. Her notes have SOB On almost every entry? Why lie? The consultant wanted to change or supplement her antibiotic but was advised not to by the microbiologist? Her health continued to worsen and they booked her for a bronchoscopy on 15/9. Unfortunately this was too little too late as her infection markers were now 260. I believe this is a red flag for sepsis - they were 60 the day she was admitted. Her O2 levels had dropped but they still took her for the procedure? She didn’t tolerate it well and had to be supported on a portable oxygen cylinder. Upon returning to the ward they didn’t do any observations and didn’t transfer her to the on wall supply as they should? As she was talking to us through the mask she started to really struggle and gasp for breath. A HCA noted there was no oxygen and looked to find the cylinder was empty. They couldn’t stabilise her and called the ITU team. The consultant advised the family that her lung had collapsed and they needed to take her to critical care for support. They then advised they needed to put her on life support as her breathing was causing too much stress on her heart. She had a cardiac arrest as they sedated her. She was resuscitated but died 36hrs later.nThe ME ignored 2 conversations highlighting our concerns over the death. He didn’t refer to the coroner as he should have done. We were told we would hear the outcome of the internal investigation into the oxygen tank but heard nothing.nA subsequent complaint has highlighted they missed opportunities for an earlier intervention to treat her when she kept presenting unwell. The hospital has recognised failings on the ward and that her death should have been referred to the coroner. The oxygen cylinder is on going and they don’t know why we weren’t advised of the initial investigation. The nurses account as part of that investigation is so far from the truth it’s farcical as I have footage knowing they would lie to show what happened. They say she wasn’t attached to the oxygen when it ran out. I know she was. Surely as part of any transparent investigation you speak to all material witnesses not just staff? The hospital and especially her consultant who apparently doesn’t know how to access all her medical records are responsible for an avoidable death robbing us of her last few years - shame on you.
I would like to thank the staff in room 7 in the radiotherapy department for their care and humour and some good music while being treated, the chap at the mould room who made and fitted the head and neck mask made it an easy experience, also the staff at the red reception desk they were always helpful and always with a smile
I would just like to thank the nurses on radiotherapy room 3 for their fantastic support during my 4week treatment, you made time to chat, laugh, and give encouragement, thanks again
