Live Dosa

About

We are a small family restaurant serving authentic Keralan food. Taking pride in both our food and our service, we hope to welcome you soon.

Story

“Atithi Devo Bhava” an old Indian phrase whice translates to “guest is equivalent to god.” Hospitality has always been a part of Indian culture. At Live Dosa we have always welcomed our guests as part of our little family. We have always believed hospitality is more than just food and service. It is about creating relations.
We pride ourselves on our distinctively flavoured food from the coast of Kerala (South India) lovingly prepared by our chefs from scratch. Nothing prepared en masse, all food cooked to order with a blend of spices and herbs unique to every dish. We also offer a choice of beverages, carefully selected to complement the inimitable flavours of the food. We even source some of our wines from India, wines that not only match the strong peppery flavours of the curries but can also complement some of our milder, delicately flavoured curries.
With food also comes culture and tradition. We try to present a glimpse of our south Indian culture through various events like seafood festival, Bharatnatyam (Indian classical dance) Eve and festive celebrations like our Onam Sadhya.
Why not join us on this culinary journey and be a part of this small family called Live Dosa.

Temper this entire review with the knowledge that due to illness/hospitalisation one woman was running the entire restaurant that night and so it took over 3hrs for a table of 8 to get through mains only. Probably about an hour before we even saw a poppadom. This is likely not indicative of average service - but if it were me, I would have probably closed front of house and just dealt with takeaway orders that evening - but sometimes these things can't be helped. Anyway. Drinks seemed a little on the expensive side, but central Chelmsford is like that I guess. Can't fault quality, glassware was clean. Pretty good range including soft drinks. Entrée, I guess, at any kind of Indian is usually poppadoms, I'm not used to a West Indian, and I usually expect to see a plate with maybe 4 - 6 between 4 people, and some dishes of the sundries, chutney, raitha, lime pickle - but here they were served on what I can only equate to the kind of tray you'd see a school dinner or prison meal on, 2 poppadoms and maybe 2 tablespoons on a spicy coconut sauce, and another 2 of a plain coconut sauce. After having waited so long we were all rather concerned. Sauces were OK, but there wasn't anything familiar and variety was lacking - you might like this, but I don't think it really satisfied what I wanted. Mains were lacklustre to say the least. Most of us ordered mains as a "dosa supreme" (I think that's what it was called...) where you get a dosa (like a stiff crepe), the main in the largest dish, some sort of lentil/vegetable side dish, and a small amount of the coconut sauce. The quality of the dishes was *ok*. It was real paneer in mine (something you don't see everywhere, mozzarella≠paneer people!) and the sauce was fine - not really something to write home about - probably wouldn't have thought too much about it if we'd not been in the restaurant for over 2 hours at this point. If you order the curry alone, you just get the small dish with the main in. I don't feel either option represents a good value for money. The bill for us worked out to about 20/head for a main and a drink. Not exorbitant, but the fact that no discount or even a complimentary drink was offered for the terrible service only compounded my displeasure. Overall, it wasnt dire - but its up there with some of the worst meals out I've ever had the displeasure of enduring. Mediocre food, terrible service and higher than average prices - I'll not be going back to check if its improved, as there's so many good restaurants in that area. Live dosa needs to step up their game if they want to compete in that location!

Really authentic dosa. Was very quiet when we went, so not much of an atmosphere, but you can't fault the food - it's fantastic. Classic south indian cuisine, every bit as good as the dosa I had in India.
