Horniman Museum and Gardens

About

An inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free museum and gardens in South London’s Forest Hill.

Story

We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.

Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.

Our visitors come time and again to explore our free museum, take part in our activities and enjoy our 16-acre gardens. And they discover something fascinating and mesmerising every time.

We visited to see the dinosaur exhibit, which was small but very good. There were quite a few distressed children who I'm guessing didn't expect the size/noise/movement of some of the models. The artwork in the exhibit was incredible. We also visited the other galleries and the aquarium, all of which were informative and good. If the weather had been better we would've looked at the gardens too, we'll do that next time.
Such a lovely museum, where to start? The staff are so friendly and helpful, the cafe food is tasty and queues aren't too long, the exhibitions are interesting and fun. The butterfly house is by far the best place in the museum and so wonderful. We had such a good day and will definitely be coming back again soon!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A place where we have been often when the kids were small and we had lots of fun. Revisited this weekend and it’s still a beautiful place even though it’s not all open because of refurbishment in the main area, but still lots of things to see: music room, pop-up room, adolescent wonderland, aquarium we paid to see it, garden, little farm, playground, coffee shop. This place has something for everyone. Nice, helpful staff. Highly recommended. Garden is beautiful and clean.
It's a lovely space to enjoy time with family. The exhibition space is quite small and cozy, so expect to take your time navigating through the crowd, but the space is lovely, well arranged, interesting and fun. There are some renovations happening so part of the exhibition is closed until 2026. It's still very much worth the visit. There is a Sunday market happening each week with some great local sellers and artists. The little zoo is also a lovely addition.
Very nice place for visit, they had very nice collections of local heritage and musical instruments. It is fee and you can expect student during weekdays. Aquarium and butterfly house is paid. Very nice ground for walking, flower garden is not maintained properly at this moment, may be will be it will be beautiful during spring time.
Woow what a nice family day out. I’m not sure why this place is not advertised everywhere. My 4 year old had such a great time. It’s not a massive museum but just enough to enjoy. The garden is gorgeous and every Sunday they have a market with amazing street food and hand crafted items. If you are planning to go I would highly recommend to take a blanket and have a picnic there. We didn’t visit the aquarium or the dinosaur place you need a ticket I heard the aquarium is great!
What a beautiful place. Couple of downers are the butterflies and aquarium should be priced a lot less as it works out expensive g do if families. Not everyone can afford. The cafe under renovation at peak season? Beautiful gardens well maintained great views.Visited onWeekday
Free to enter museum and grounds. Venue is clean, well staffed and lots of options of things to do. Seems to be an absolute parent draw with kids everywhere which is quite loud if you don't have them. The aquarium an additional cost but worth a visit. It's small and can be hard to view if kids take over, but at quiet times its lovely. Spent about 2-3 hours inside but sadly raining when we went outside.
Wonderful place for all ages. Brilliant that much of it is FREE too! Lots to see & do both inside and out. Well worth a visit. Museum and Gardens were busy but not overcrowded. Cafe busy but efficient service. Bonus of real life cafe cat to discover!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
On a rainy english summers day was the perfect kid friendly museum! Really really enjoyed it. The dinosaur exhibition was worth every penny, lots of interactive and fun activities for the kids and adults like dress up , reading corners, colouring in, animated models too. The aquarium was also super interesting show lots of different habitats. Many really well thought out kids touches like steps doe the kids in the aquarium to get the most out of viewing the tanks. Kids height handrails too. The butterfly house was also superb with knowledgeable staff and lots to do. The gardens also superb. The music room was actually so interesting listening to every instrument. Could spend days here the whole Museum is splendid, the staff friendly and helpful and the gardens stunning. Only alight gripe food options very limited and no sheltered seating as outside so even big canopy patio umbrellas wasn’t really protective with the weather
