Horniman Museum and Gardens

About

An inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free museum and gardens in South London’s Forest Hill.

Story

We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.

Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.

Our visitors come time and again to explore our free museum, take part in our activities and enjoy our 16-acre gardens. And they discover something fascinating and mesmerising every time.

Gardens well designed with views over central London to die for. Museum unfortunately closed due to Covid. Good nearby connections to other green walks.
Crazy golf. Great park. Fantastic museum. The children my wife and I find this a great place to visit. As it's a short drive from our home we find it an amazing place to visit and do so regularly. We are members and definitely feel it's value for money.
Nice place to visit as a family. Learn about various animals, skeletons, flowers. Great for some science assignments. A few live animals, and lots of space to run up and down......and free entry. Get snacks at the cafe or bring your own food.
This museum was outstanding and way more than you can expect. It has a small aquarium, a natural history room filled with animals and birds and also a cultural exhibition related to other cultures. It is rich and full of what Mr. Horniman gathered while being a tea merchant in the 19th century!
Great free museum with so much to see, with lovely gardens and an animal walk. There's a cost for the Aquarium, Butterfly house and exhibitions but an annual membership is really good value if you are local. Staff are helpful and friendly.
