The room and refurbishments are fine. But staff is quite terrible. Cleaning staff frequently skip days. Despite claimed to make weekday daily cleans, they probably only work 3or4 days a weekday. And some are very unfriendly on students. Guy at reception suppose to allocate parcels. Once I found amazon saying arrival but they didnt put note in mailbox, I asked and they said none. I looked at mailroom myself and things are just there. This happened more than once on more than just me. ONLY live here if you want a BUDGET choice close to uni nearby!
Highly recommend Best location-across the street of the British Museum Warm staff & Safe security-only open the gate by scanning room card and check by front desk. They will try their best to make you feel at home New decoration-totally new decoration, with windows to prevent noise from outside. HGH has laundry room, kitchen, study room and lounge. Great choice for students
I have lived here since April 2018 and I very happy here. The location is amazing: I go almost everywhere walking and save a lot of money! All the main buses and tibe lines are less than 10 minutes away. You can have a room facing the busy street of the British Museum or one that faces the other side, which is quieter in the morning. I have always enjoyed urban noise, so my room facing Great Russell Street is honestly a great experience. Here I have always shared rooms and it's been very enjoyable. The rooms are big and bright. The furniture and carpet are new. The common facilities are cleanes everyday and you can always report anything you are not comfortable with. Although I never had to complain about anything. Staff is the best thing at HGH, from maintanance staff to managers. All staff are kind, mindful, smiley and ready to talk with you. In spite of the busy work that they deal with everyday, managers and administrative staff always did their best to assist any queries I had. I know most of them and it really feel like a family.
Two stars for the receptionthe manger Maria here and its location. Some staffs here are really rude and unfriendly, which makes you feel they have racial distinction. Some staff's behaviour will let you feel they do not like Chinese students here. I just had a really bad experience today that makes me have the stress response. They did treat me in a really brutal way. Many thanks for Maria tried to help me and talk with me. Actually, this is my first time to have stress response, I could not believe it happened at the accommodation where I lived like at home.
5 stars just for Maria, Yanel and the cleaning crew. Maria always goes above and beyond to help whenever you have an issue she is really hardworking and kind, exact same for Yanel too : I’ve stayed here for a few years now and Maria + Yanel are definitely the best managers this place has had The cleaning crew are amazing. They make us fill out a survey every year and every year my only criticism was that I wished they cleaned on the weekends too because the facilities get very dirty on the weekends - my criticism was clearly taken on board because now some of the cleaning crew clean on the weekends too. They do an incredible job and deserve all the praise
Staff are friendly but the security guards in the front desk are unfriendly and condescending sometimes. The facilities are renovated but unfortunately the basement fridges sometimes are not cold enough.
I don't really write reviews, but I feel the need to for these halls. I cancelled my contract after 3 months because I could not handle it anymore. We had no cold water for 3 MONTHS on the ground floor kitchen, forcing us to do dishes in the bathroom because the water was burning. They had the audacity to give us chocolates to say sorry instead of a partial refund for example. I preferred if they didn't give me anything frankly. We signed a contract where it was NOT stipulated that we couldn't have guests at all, but yet all year long, even if covid restrictions were allowing it, we could not bring anyone. Common spaces were closed, I had a minuscule kitchen for 5 people, we were promised the big basement kitchen but it only opened for floor 6, therefore me paying 290 a week did not make much sense. Staff is RUDE, I cannot emphasize this enough, unhelpful and unprofessional. They never reply to emails, and when they do, it's wayyy too late. The vibe overall was off, I stayed in halls last year and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I'm a really social person so it's never hard for me to make friends, but in Helen Graham there is 0 effort in helping students adapt, make friends on their floor or enjoy their year despite the horrible circumstances they face with COVID Worst part: I cannot collect my things AFTER I cancelled my contract because they 'are following covid restrictions and I am another household'. MY belongings, are in my room, and I can't even touch them. The audacity. The only reason I give one star is because I can't give 0
The only good thing about Helen Graham House is the location. The entire summer there have been building works going on every single day. All residents had to suddenly move to another floor and room to accommodate the place being turned into a building site. They should have closed the accommodation over the summer. Everyone rushes out of the building in the morning, being unable to spend time in their room since it is extremely noisy throughout the building. You never know when builders or HGH staff are going to enter your room; luckily they knock but it can happen at any moment since we get weekly emails of "check ups" having to take place. Also get ready for regular nights of the fire alarm going off for HOURS. The showers have zero water pressure and the water from the tap doesn't even get cold. If you are on the top floor you have to go down to the basement to get some drinking water from one machine which is falling apart too. The laundry machines are expensive and don't work half of the time, this means you end up turning your room into a launderette. If you want to live somewhere with constant drilling and people coming into your personal space, making sure your room never feels like home, this is the place for you.
This is now my second year staying here. There were a lot of problems last year mainly to do with how students were treating the facilities but it was still really enjoyable and I was able to make a lot of friends. This year was awful. Google keeps hiding my review so im going to have to write this in as little words as possible. 1. Basement kitchen was closed, when it opened it was only for floor 6 students - how is that fair on the rest of us?!! 2. Mini kitchens the rest of us got assigned to were TINY and always packed as people who were not assigned to them would use them which isnt very covid safe, is it? - would have been far safer to just open the basement kitchen for everyone to use as its HUGE. 3. They hyped up the basement kitchen so much by sending us emails even before we arrived asking us to bring in specific pots and pans that work with the new inductor hobs in the basement kitchen - why send all these emails and excite us to use new facilities knowing we wouldnt be able to use them? I also dont like how all the social rooms are closed, if the basement was opened for only floor 6 why couldnt they open up some of the social spaces for certain floors too, so we all get something? I found it really hard to study as well, imagine the only place you can get work done is in your room - the place you're already in 24/7. The least they could have done is open up the study room, that room was so helpful for me last year. EDIT: they now opened the study room. 2 weeks before exams start. how helpful ! for some reason my review keeps disappearing..i wonder if its being hidden on purpose. im going to keep reposting until it stays so other people know about my experience because if i knew it was going to be like this I wouldnt have stayed here Definitely will not be staying here next year
I stayed in this place for a few years as a student. The new management of Optivo was absolutely heartless in many ways - they evicted around 130 permanent residents from this building in June 2019 as to make it student accommodation only. Some of the evicted residents have become homeless as a result of their new policy. The management also refused to give references to the evicted residents' potential future landlords and made it even more difficult for everyone to get into renting market. I do not recommend living here out of principle and experience. I have much to say about this place - the Optivo management is not interested in supporting people at all, whether it was Helen Graham House staff suffering in silence or misery of their past residents. The way they proceeded with building works over the summer 2019 was ruthless with no regards for our right of peaceful enjoyment of the property. They are only after making profits and they don't care how. Once they get sufficient amount of better reviews here thanks to somewhat renovated parts of the building, the rent will go skyrocketing high. Don't fuel their greed. You have been warned.
