Hawksmoor Borough

About

Hawksmoor Borough opened in early 2017.

Story

Hawksmoor Borough benefits from the best produce available and the close proximity to suppliers based in Borough Market, as well as our usual focus on great steak, great wine and great cocktails. Our chefs walk round one of the best produce markets in the country and create regularly changing seasonal specials that aren’t available at any other Hawksmoor restaurant.

Aside from its fantastic location, the building itself has a story to tell. The site lies within the grounds of the medieval Winchester Palace, built in the 12th century by the Bishop of Winchester, Henry Blois (who some say chose is said to have chosen the location because of its adjoining brothels). The building was originally built as a hops warehouse in the mid-19th Century by hop merchants Wood, Field & Hanbury, before being taken over in 1933 by Borough Market ‘colonial and foreign fruit’ merchant J O Sims, whereupon it became a fruit warehouse and auction hall.

The menu features our signature native-breed steaks and much-loved seasonal and ethically sourced dishes. We’ll have £5 corkage on Mondays, and on Sundays there are the Roasts that Observer Food Monthly named as one of the best Sunday lunches in the UK. Our Express Menu (£25 for 2 courses, £28 for 3) is available from 12pm until 6.30pm and after 10pm every Monday to Saturday.

Finally, our 14-cover Cook’s Room has its own private kitchen and, when not being used by our chefs creating new dishes, is available for feasting menus, private hire and the occasional special ticketed event!

Went there for a Sunday Roast and had the Mellow Yellow Spritz to drink. The Roast Beef was full of flavor. The Mellow Yellow Spritz was refreshing and complemented the meal nicely. The service was lovely. Staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely a spot worth checking out for a great dining experience!Food: 4/5
Consistently good steak, great vibe, staff are friendly and attentive. Very good menu selection. We had the t bone, lobster and bone marrow starter. The steak was cooked perfectly, perfect amount of fat. The lobster came out quite late - they forgot about the order but we didn't mind but they kindly offered to give it on the house. Amazing service. Highly recommend!
Initially concerned when we walked in and saw the decor, but we needn’t have been. We had a fantastic meal and our waiter was great. Some of the best steaks we’ve ever had. Will definitely be back.Food: 5/5
A delicious Sunday roast - can’t complain about the portion sizes and the quality. Nice vibe, bustly and busy. However, the service was slow and our steak was ordered medium rare, but came a bit more well done than what we’d liked - we sent back and were satisfied with our new cuts. The cauliflower cheese and sticky toffee pudding were alright, but nothing to phone home about!
One good option for the meat lovers. A little bit expensive even for London standards. We paid £400 for two couples, included two bottles of wine, main course each one and a nice good chocolate desserts. The tables are so close each other and it’s so noisily. The waitress were pressured us most of the time….to order quickly, to clean the table ….I don’t think this is what you want for a lovely night with friends.
My husband and I had a lovely dinner yesterday. The steak - Chateaubriand - was perfectly cooked, and the sides - creamed spinach and garlic mushrooms were amazingly harmonised with the steak. Chips were crispy and seasoned well. The staff for my table was very attentive and professional. Even though the restaurant was busy, the service was good enough. The borough branch is a little bit more casual than other branches, but still good to go for a special occasion. Recommend this place!
Sunday roast was exceptional. Very busy, a lot of fun. The Yorkshire puddings were light and the gravy very flavourful.Food: 5/5
I celebrated my anniversary here last week and I'm so happy I chose Hawksmoor. It took me a long time to decide where to go but I made the best decision of my life. From the beginning to the end it was amazing. The chateaubriand was not just perfectly cooked but I've never tasted a steak so good. It was out of this world. The starters, the sides, and the dessert were all perfect. I could go into details but we all know that the meat was the star of the dinner and I can't imagine going elsewhere for a juicy steak instead of Hawksmoor. Special thanks to our lovely waitress who made our night even more special. I hope we can return soon as now we know where to get the best steak in London
Came for the Sunday lunch. They did mention they’d serve the roast beef pink, but I think it was just on the wrong side of rare - parts through the centre felt like they were hadn’t quite felt enough heat and were edging towards raw. If that’s your thing, you might enjoy it! Gravy was excellent - only complaint was that we could really have used a bit more! Yorkshire and vegetables carrot and cabbage were great. It’s a lovely cosy dining room and makes you think of creating a family Sunday roast tradition. Service was extremely polished, prompt and attentive.
I had heard about the new Hawksmoor lunch menu, and spontaneously decided to visit the Borough location while walking past on a Thursday. They had just opened for lunch and I was seated right away. I ordered the Tunworth Royale patty melt, essentially a burger toasted sandwich, this being the item that had grabbed my attention when first learning about the new menu. Considering I was one of the first people to place an order, the food did take quite a long time to be delivered around 30 minutes. It was an enjoyable sandwich although it did not hold together and I had to resort to eating it with a fork and knife. The accompanying onion rings were very nice. Without any drinks, I paid £18 for my lunch which seems like a bargain for a visit to Hawksmoor! While undoubtedly great value, the sandwich was not as good as I hoped it would be. For context, I would have been perfectly happy if I purchased this from a vendor in neighbouring Borough Market, but this being Hawksmoor the bar is set pretty high, and I know from past experiences that there are definitely more enjoyable things to eat on their regular menu. Overall my faith in Hawksmoor remains unwavering but I will probably just revert to ordering a nice big steak with a few sides on my next visit!
