Hardcastle Crags

Story

Hardcastle Crags is a wooded Pennine valley in West Yorkshire, England, owned by the National Trust. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies approximately 2mi north of the town of Hebden Bridge and 10mi west of the town of Halifax.Gibson MillApproximately half a mile along the valley there is a 19th century cotton mill called Gibson Mill. The mill was water powered and has been renovated to demonstrate renewable energy sources and a sustainability strategy. It is surrounded by 400acre of unspoilt woodland and crossed by 30mi of footpaths. The former cotton mill was one of the first powered mills built at the start of the Industrial Revolution.Water powered turbines, photo voltaic panels, composting toilets, a wood burning boiler, a wood burning ceramic stove and locally-sourced reclaimed interior materials have gone into making the venture sustainable. The mill reopened to the public on Saturday, 24 September 2005 and there are exhibits about the mill and its workers.

Waterfalls, crags and dogs. So much to see at the crags. A most enjoyable visit including a tea shop half way round. The path up the crags themselves may be best avoided

I really liked it at this National Trust. It had really nice mix of walks and historical interest. The building and parking is free for members and if you aren't a member you do pay for parking. There is a cafe and shop. The cafe did lovely food (it is national trust prices for the food - I like to think of the higher than average cafe prices as a donation). It was really interesting to read about how the building had been used. I really liked the environmentally friendly initiatives they had put in for example bio boiler and wormery at the toilets. I would recommend a visit.

During the final few miles of our loop of Hebdon bridge we can through the hardcastle crags. A lovely walk through the forest following the river. With toilets info and cafe at the old mill. A good walk and not to challenging.
