It's a great museum and it is free which is unusual for a museum of this size. It's spread across two floors with many natural history exhibits on display. Judging by the information in the text displays, I would say it caters towards children more so than adults. The planetarium costs a few pounds to enter and is suitable for children and adults.
Free museum !!! Fantastic day out for all of the family. We really enjoyed our day at the museum, there's something for every member of the family ! The smallest family member loved seeing dinosaur bones of a T-rex. The middle sized child loved the space exhibition ! I loved the Egyptian exhibition with a real mummy.nnFantastic indoor and outdoor picnic seating areas, bathrooms were clean and friendly staff. Well worth the visit !
Free museum in historic building over several floors. Amazing selection covering wildlife, Hadrians Wall, Iron Age and Egyptians....to name a few. Liked the personal touches where individuals are brought to life making them, and the history feel relatable and less remote.nnSeparate children's area so you can relax a bit and let your children learn through play.nnSpent 2 hrs exploring and didn't see it all!nnToilets and lockers £1 non refundable available. If you get caught short there are nappies, a few clothing items and ladies sanitary products available. Free but a donation wld be appreciated if you can, to keep it available for others.
What a great Museum, and FREE. no dogs allowednIf you like Roman and Egyptian artifacts then this is great for you, plus they have much more, you could spend the whole day here if you've never been before, lovely green area out the front with benches for dinner break, we definitely enjoyed are visit.nThe museum was established in 1884 and was formerly known as the Hancock Museum. In 2006 it merged with Newcastle University's Museum of Antiquities and Shefton Museum to form the Great North Museum. The museum reopened as the Great North Museum, Hancock in May 2009 following a major extension and refurbishment of the original Victorian building.
The museum itself has lots to see and my kids and I enjoyed it. Getting there was tricky driving through the city, not knowing it at all. We ended up having to park in the NCP car park costing £9 for 3 hours as there is no parking at the museum itself. I didn’t know that, so we pulled in to find there is a car park for disabled visitors and a large staff car park that was empty of cars!! Frustrating to say the least.nAlready feeling agitated there seemed to be no set way to go around the exhibits which I found confusing as an adult with ADHD and felt quite overwhelmed by the end. Some interesting things to see, dinosaur skeleton and animals on entering are quite a sight.
