A 21 year old, family run, award winning cafe/restaurant. Our food is all vegan, gluten free, nut free and palm oil free. Homemade means Homemade!

Story

Now into our 19th year, we remain on track: vegan, gluten free, nut free and palm oil free. Our mission is sustainability, exemplifying simple good food, sourcing locally where we can, teaching others how to do it, paying wages that people can live on, heating with refrigeration and cooking effluence and using windows & doors for air conditioning!

We are happy to take daytime reservations for 4 or more, for any wheelchair users or special occasions. Otherwise, people just come & are seated on arrival.
For evening time, we recommend reserving a table because we never know if we are going to be busy or quiet!

We stop serving tables around an hour before close.

We don't just sell food, we sell cookbooks, rugs, kits, ceramics, novels and hampers. Check out our website or ring us!

I used to meet friends here every week, it has great vegetarian and vegan food. Even if you’re of the more omnivorous persuasion you should not be disappointed by the food here, well not often anyway. I say this because they change the menu often, which obviously isn’t a bad thing, but it can be a bit hot and miss as to whether you like what you order. Still, perhaps that’s part of the fun? Oh, almost forgot, the interior is amazing and worth at least one visit just to see inside! Especially a couple of rooms upstairs.

Food so good we couldn't wait before taking the photo. Everything was so flavourful. Not good 'for vegan' food, just good food! Cool vibe/ music and nice people serving and cooking. Would recommend the taster platter, perfect amount for 3 people and there wasn't 1 dish we didn't love. The kebab and tofu stir fry and the fritters were all incred

We were looking for an afternnoon refresher, the local tea shops didn't appeal to our savoury taste buds. Found this little oasis, a delight from walking through the door. Interesting way of serving teas and coffees. Full of stories and anecdotes. We left refreshed through good food, teas and laughter.

Went for dinner. Inside is really cool, very windy like you're in someone's house, with each room themed differently. Interesting menu with different options, we went for the sharing platter. Delicious food (especially the frittata with apple chutney), got 8 different things to try, all sorts. A Moroccan/veggie tapas experience, really enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly, would definitely go again!

Great food, atmosphere, settings and service. This was my fourth or fifth time at the restaurant and I would definitely keep recommending it: I have been with a large group of friends, my parents and most recently with extended family and a young baby. Each time the venue was flexible and accommodating for everyone's needs (free food for the baby), food was hot, tasty and quickly served, portions were generous and definitely affordable for a lunch out in York. It's a vegan restaurant, which as a vegetarian I definitely appreciate, but I have taken non-veggies there and everyone has found something they enjoyed. Pros: sustainable/local ingredients, friendly staff, 'mathematical chips', food for everyone, good drinks menu including beer, cider and wine. Cons: seasonal, but limited space in Winter as my favourite draw is sitting outside, having to go outside to use toilets (which are heated and inside but separate entrance on outside of building).
