Great service! I couldn’t pick up my package with Aaron in Bham Quinton, so they sorted it out for me to get my package at the shop. Everyone was very nice and very efficient :
There are some good staff at the bike area , but the bikes I bought for my kids were assembled badly, I had to adjust the brakes myself and pedal came off after a day and had to take it back to repair all the way to the shop. This is not good enough. Also on the day I bought the bike when asking about a noise when pushing the bike back, this rude young man at the bike area said you don’t pedal the bike back. Even my child said how rude he was.nnA nice shop with reasonable prices and good items, but staff at the bike area could do with some more commitment for the money they paid for.
My Decathlon experience began, as many questionable life decisions do, with a perfectly innocent online order.nnI started cautiously with socks. Yes, socks. Nothing ambitious. Nothing technically demanding. Just fabric tubes for feet.nnTo my considerable surprise, they arrived on time, matched the description and were genuinely good quality. I was impressed. For one brief and beautiful moment, I believed I had discovered a reliable retailer.nnHow delightfully optimistic of me.nnEncouraged by this extraordinary sock-related success, I decided to order a backpack, T-shirts and trousers. This was when the Decathlon experience began to reveal its true character.nnThe backpack arrived looking as though it had survived an unfortunate incident at a paint factory, followed by an equally unfortunate attempt to clean it. It appeared that somebody may have been unwell on it, washed it in diluted paint and then decided that sending it to a customer was still a perfectly reasonable conclusion.nnNaturally, I took photographs and contacted customer service.nnThis is where Decathlon truly excels.nnTheir representatives are exceptionally talented at writing emails explaining how deeply sorry they are. In fact, I received so much sympathy that I briefly wondered whether I had contacted a grief counselling service rather than a sports retailer.nnEvery email was beautifully polite, wonderfully apologetic and completely ineffective.nnOrganising the collection of the damaged backpack, however, appeared to be beyond the limits of modern logistics. I am still unsure why. Perhaps vans are no longer able to travel to my area. Perhaps the laws of physics prevent backpacks from being collected. Or perhaps everyone was simply too busy writing another email explaining how sincerely sorry they were that nothing had been done.nnThen there was the T-shirt.nnAfter one wash at 30°C, it expanded from size L to something closer to XXXL. Quite impressive, really. Decathlon managed to provide me with not only a T-shirt, but also emergency camping equipment.nnMost retailers charge extra for a larger size. Decathlon provides the upgrade automatically.nnEventually, I visited a Decathlon store in person, and suddenly the entire experience made perfect sense.nnItems were lying on the floor, the staff appeared fully occupied with each other, and the bicycle display was covered in enough dust to deserve its own carbon dating assessment.nnThe store had the atmosphere of a place where organisation had once been discussed in a meeting, but sadly nobody had taken notes.nnAt that point, I stopped being surprised.nnDecathlon clearly has potential. Some products may even be very good. The socks, after all, were excellent. Unfortunately, the company appears to have developed a rather unusual business model: occasionally provide a decent product, then test the customer’s patience, free time and emotional resilience.nnCustomer service seems far more interested in apologising than resolving anything. One can only admire the consistency.nnSo, if you have excess money, unlimited patience and a particular interest in collecting beautifully written but entirely pointless apology emails, Decathlon may be exactly what you are looking for.nnPersonally, I cannot recommend it.nnMy overall impression is that the customer’s time and money are treated as minor administrative details.nnStill, I am sure they are terribly sorry.
Writing this as I’m leaving the shop, 5* service, big shout out to Alex who was in the bike section, an encyclopaedia of knowledge, so helpful and a pleasure to chat to. Thank you for helping us out with our bike shopping for our upcoming holiday trip! He definitely is a star employee in your shop.
Went to look at some gravel bikes. Guy on the cycle stand hadn't got a clue. Telling me I couldn't change things on a bike like the stem because it has a computer mount fitted to it. Which is an aftermarket part that can be fitted to any bike. Avoid
