Story

The Deacon's House is a famous scottish Cafe near Edinburgh' s castle. It is believed that at one time the present Cafe was Deacon Brodie's workshop. William Brodie was a well known and respected cabinet-maker by day and by night gambler, drinker and thief. Robbing his clients with copies of the keys made while working in their shops. His life inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write "Jekyll and Hyde". Nowadays, you can read his story painted on the wall of the Cafe from 1745-1788 and admire the historical building. Deacon's house Cafe is a perfect place to stop for morning coffee, tea, lunch (fresh local produce) homemade soups, freshly prepared salads and sandwiches with an excellent selection of home baking and puddings.

A friendly welcome awaits you!

The heritage of this place dates back to 1422 for their kitchen ceiling and other decorations of Brodie, if I remember the year correctly, are impressive, but I think this pace does not reach my F&B standards and thus three stars. The door gentleman responsible for assigning the seats showed surprise when he confirmed I was a solo traveller. I am not pleased by that, for what is wrong with travelling alone? He only noticed me waiting outside as they requested after his colleague reminded him. Unpleasant starting experience followed by that he asked me to switch tables by claiming there was another group of people waiting outdoor. I did not see the group coming in, but I followed his second table arrangements. The waiter did not set my table probably. No big deal for that. But his hands touched the top of salt and pepper…. The latte art and the coffee itself are lovely. The food presentation is not bad.
Had a lovely lunch here. Had to wait 10 minutes for an inside seat but we don’t mind the wait as it’s always delicious and cosy here. I had a lovely leek and potato soup which was thick and creamy and then one of the best scones with cream and strawberry jam that I’ve ever had. I love the wall paintings which tell the story and the tearoom vibes. Vegetarian options: They have some options available to suit vegetarians.
We had the pleasure of having breakfast here whilst on holidays. The menu has good healthy choices and reasonable prices. Tasty food and great coffee. The staff were happy, helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. There are toilets available across the path way outside. Warm and cosy atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend
Had a late breakfast here and opted for the creme cheese bagel with Scottish Salmon. It was great. Atmosphere is unique. Nice staff.
Very nice coffee shop just 2 mins from Edinburgh castle. The building where the cafe is quite old few hundred years old at least. The cafe has seating inside and outside both. 5 star here is for the amazing staff, very friendly and very welcoming. Highly recommend.
I had some very nice porridge and green tea this morning. The staff were very friendly and let me in 5 minutes early because it was snowing. I think I'll return here again. This place seems to be popular and tables filled up within 30 minutes of it opening...so go early.
We had a pleasant lunch at this lovely old cafe off the Royal Mile last weekend. After a rather abrupt welcome when we were asked to wait outside, we were served by a very polite waiter and received our food and drinks in good time. We both had the brie, bacon and chilli jam ciabatta, which came with a small side salad. It was well-filled and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend the cafe for a light lunch.
Wonderfull café, with a great system of ordering and bringing food. Sometimes you need to wait a couple of minutes but trust me it is worth the wait. We found it by accident but went back the next day for lunch because the food and location where so good!!
Very friendly staff and delicious food. Everything we ordered was excellent! Rather busy but with good reason: I would definitely recommend this place. FYI: the toilet is outdoors and can only be accessed with a pin code. This makes sure that only guests use the toilet; so ask the waiter for the code :
Such cosy and romantic place in the alley. Polite and pleasant staff who asks into where we were from. Great food at good price
