This review relates to Pegasus ward: I am an MSc student mental health nurse and spent a couple of months on this ward as one of my placements. I can truthfully say that the staff on this ward provide outstanding person centred care to their patients and if any one of my family were to need treatment I would rest assured that they were safe and well looked after by the team here. From some of the incredible support workers such as Becca, Ahmed and Charles, to the school teachers, psychologists, OTs, clinicians and nurses, the staff here genuinely care about their patients. Particular credit goes to the nursing team who follow the nursing code to the letter, placing ethics and high quality care at the forefront of everything that they do. I spent several months on a different ward within the hospital, however Pegasus sets a standard that the rest of the hospital should be following. I hope they are proud and give credit to themselves for the incredible work that they do.
My son has been here for 6 months and the care that he has received has been consistently good. The ward that he was in - Pegasus - may have been unsettled at times but the staff were always transparent in their communication. The new system of emails at the end of every shift is such a great innovation as the phones are often busy and it is hard to speak to a nurse they are busy nursing!. Even though we were so far away and the journeys were sometimes awful and at the beginning often only for an hour I wouldn’t have wanted him to stay anywhere else. All the staff from the reception / admin team to the Medical teams and MDTeams are super and work together to provide the best care possible. The ward manager must work dbl time! It’s difficult to do a review as such but when your child is placed in a unit and you are searching for some reassurance I hope that you read this and you feel some sense that things although feel difficult and bewildering your child will be looked after and cared for and will hopefully return in a better place.
In 2021 a young girl died, ligature suicide, in this hospital. The coroner recently reported the staff had 'limited concern for vulnerable people. ' Her regular checks on her safety, were late, she died of asphyxiation due to a ligature. Staff failed to check her safety on time, tragically she died. It just doesn't get any more disgraceful than that. Read about it, look up Chelsea Blue Mooney on Google. Why is this hospital allowing such disasters to continue??
My child has been an inpatient on PICU, obviously its a distressing time for any family but I have found staff to accommodate their needs really well even when they are struggling. All care is given based on their individual need and when care plans do change I have been kept updated. Staff are approachable and I have found the service they offer is always explained clearly. The family liaison officer on Unicorn is especially an added bonus to the team, keeping me updated as well as always listening to my concerns, especially in the early days when my own anxiety and concerns were high.
My son was admitted to Unicorn Ward where he spent over 5 months. During the time of his stay I found all members of staff very open, approachable and supportive. Whether it was during online ward rounds, CPA meetings or when I personally called to the hospital they have always kept me informed with what was happening and regularly sending me my son's updated care plans. They listen to us and included our suggestions in decission making regarding my son's next steps. They also spoke with my son as an adult and took his opinion to stay in hospital seriously therefore he was able to appeal and went through tribunal process in which he had lots of support too. Even though that he moaned about the noise and the food and did not want to stay in hospital, he enjoyed his take aways, haircuts, beauty treatments and the PROMS. So BIG THANK YOU to all of you who organised it. THANK YOU to all of you on Unicorn Ward who were engaged in my son's care, made sure that he is safe and got better. THANK YOU also for organising the transport and bringing my son back to me for home visits as we live 3 hours away from Sheffield and otherwise I would not be able to see him. Thank you also for sending me newsletters, podcast linkwhich I really enjoyed listenning and parents online support. As well as all the lovely Good Luck cards that my son received from you. His eyes lit with happiness when he read them. You are excellent team and I wish you all best in the future.
They are horrible staff they have no time I was a patient there myself they’re just reg the server usesrs about knowing I don’t understand that they’re really iLL once one of the kids set the alarm off upstairs fire one and they tried frightening the young one saying, if you come down the adult small beats it
So, August 30th to January 28th I had my second visit to cygnet hospital Sheffield. My first stay was in September 2019 to January 2020. So two years later and what’s changed from the two star review I previously gave? Well, now with experiences with many other psychiatric units- I have to say cygnet Sheffield holds itself up quite well in comparison to other private CAMHS units, but still quite far off NHS’ own psychiatric units- I was an NHS patient both times, though. We’ll start with the positives for unicorn ward first: -Staff are very caring yes there are times when they can be snappy but overall, they are caring and everyone has bad days. They no longer stay in the office all day either as they did two years ago, so I’m glad my previous review and other’s concerns were listened to! -The psychology and OT groups on unicorn are very good! -Some blanket rules were looked at and changed from two years ago, in attempts to make the patients on the ward have more individual care. For example, chargers for phones used to be banned for all but are now allowed if individually assessed. -More activities during the day happened, reducing boredom during the day time, unlike two years ago. Positives for Pegasus ward: -The ward has some very nice decoration, it’s nicely set out, good lighting and feels a bit more homely than unicorn. -You were given the opportunity to be independent for a lot of things, for example, unless care-planned otherwise, you could have your phone at all times. -Staff were very caring, same as unicorn some staff could be in bad moods sometimes- but can’t fault people for being people. -Psychology- specifically individual sessions- were very good. The groups were good, too but with it being a GAU and people always coming and going they weren’t very consistent in what we did in each one. But again, no fault of the ward, it’s just the type of unit it is. -Informal patients were TREATED like informal patients! Which might seem like a given, but I’ve been on wards where all informal patients are basically threatened with being sectioned if they just tried to utilise leave. Positives for the hospital as a whole: -The advocacy service is amazing. -Education for the CAMHS units is very good and staff are very caring and supportive. -Art therapy from the art therapist is very good! -the external people that came in eg. Beautician and animal therapy was very good! Now for the negatives Negatives for unicorn ward: I’m going to try and steer away from personal experiences and more things that were general for everyone but of course, we’re all biased human beings. -Handing in phones and other electronics at night and during therapeutic hours was a blanket rule for all patients rather than individually assessed which meant individuals who found it more therapeutic to have these at night did not get that option, so “group boredom” at night where we would run up and down corridors to try and tire ourselves out or just distract ourselves happened a lot. This rule was not a rule on the GAU making it feel like we were being treated unfairly just for needing more support. -there wasn’t much opportunity to be independent, even in small things- for example when you stop using your phone at night. -Takeaways were only allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays- which I get they’re trying to stop us from unhealthy eating and/or wasting too much money but the idea of set days was a bit weird because maybe you’re not fancying a takeaway on Wednesday so you don’t order one but then want one on Thursday. Or maybe the takeaway place you like isn’t open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. -we would often make requests in community meeting, get them approved but then no action would be taken. -The ward is dimly lit, and has quite nasty looking floors on the corridors to be honest, so other than the artwork on the walls, the ward had quite a depressing appearance to it. Negatives for Pegasus ward: -There was a lot of short-staffing issues. -There was an insect problem, however I do believe this was sorted out
This hospital is a lot of things, but mainly it's one that cares. The MDTs are lovely across all 3 CAMHS wards at the time i was on them anyways and eventhough i didnt always like their decisions, i deep down always understood why they were made and that they were in my best interest even if i was stubborn and refused to talk to them afterwards. Now obviously you cant get along with everyone, but there are so many amazing people working there across all job roles! Support staff, domestics, receptionists, nurses, the therapy teams, doctors and so many more im not looking at you kitchen, stew is not a summer meal. They really do try to personalise your care to the least restrictive option. From the laughs to the crys, from the jokes to the messages you dont want to listen to realistically need to hear, from that hug you really need to the personal space you want depending on the obs/risk of the situation, obviously. This place has taught me so much about myself and how to cope. Its not a magic fix, hospitals never are, but i can hands down say this place helped save my life. And not just save it, but make it feel worth living again <3 There are a lot of people from there that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Only thing i can say is to just make sure to engage in what they offer. Its not likely youre going to get any better by not. Youve got to make sure to put some effort in too, which is a lot easier said than done when you feel as though nothing can get better. But at the very least it will fill your time and distract you for a while. Its not all gonna be fun, but practicing it can come in really useful in the long run. Who knew the 'T' in 'TIPP' actually helps??? Even if its just a little aha. And it never hurts to return to that safe place every now and again, imagine your younger or 'compassionate' self. Oooh, and just some hot tips, the unicorn psychologist LOVES being called Dr. And abbreviated words And the griffin OT cant get enough of Oliver Twist and definitley isnt scared of the child snatcher from chitty chitty bang bang "Can being kind to yourself be any worse than beating yourself up?"- Unicorn psychologist. Words i remind myself of every day and try to live by :
My daughter was refered to unicorn ward in Sheffield from a general in Leicester. Because of covid i didn't get to meet the staff face to face. My daughter was there for 4 weeks and her progress was fantastic. Staff drove her down to leicester for home leaves. What staff i did meet were caring and very professional towards my daughter's care. Communication between myself and staff was really good they kept me updated every day on how my daughter was doing. My daughter said the food was really nice. One negative was there was no OT at weekends so she said weekends were quite boring. My daughter was discharged to home on 22/12/2020staff from Sheffield even brought her home.. She is doing really well. I would like to say a big thank you to Jackie and Tate as they were the two members of staff i had the most contact with.
This place needs reviewing by professionals,The staff are rude and mean to both patients and parents,I'm glad my daughter is now out of there as staying there was making her mental state worse,Should be closed down in my opinion
