Crossbones Graveyard
"Crossbones Graveyard and Garden of Remembrance is a former post-medieval burial ground, the final resting place of thousands of Bankside's poor and overlooked. As a garden of remembrance, it offers a quiet space for reflection, with a particular focus on those who were felt to be 'outcast'. Mizuko jizo statues act as a focal point for people grieving the loss of a young child for any reason, while the ‘Ribbon Gates’ are adorned with tokens of remembrance by visitors from all over the world. Monthly vigils are held at the gates to honour the outcast dead 23rd of each month, 7pm. With a pond and varied planting, the garden sanctuary for wildlife too."

Lovely volunteers with a lot of knowledge they're willing to share with everyone who's interested in this very special place. When you enter you go up a bump - this is all the bodies piled up beneath you! This place is an important marker of dark social times but also a marker that society has changed since then although there's much to aim for still. Go there, get aware of things that have been and things that are yet to come.
An awe-inspiring place with a rich, tragic past which still manages to leave visitors with hope for a kinder world for those living on society's edges. Fantastic, knowledgeable helpers who will tell visitors all about the fascinating history of the site and surrounding District. The beautiful wildlife friendly garden is an oasis of calm in a busy city. A must-see for visitors to the Shard/Borough Market/London Bridge area.
This beautiful place is hidden away. Making our way there felt like a pilgrimage. When we visited the garden is open on Friday from 12 until 2 we were welcomed by a volunteer. Others were busy tending the plants and ponds. While sited in the middle of a busy part of town there is a sense of peace and solitude here. I loved the altars and memorials and artwork around the site.
This was definitely one of my favorite places to visit, and will be on the top to see again, once able to return. A wonderful little gem in the middle of the city. I suggest reading up on the history of the place through the website or other, as it helps to really take in everything that this treasure has to offer. A fairly easy find put in maps, and actually bigger than we anticipated. We stayed longer than we planned, and absolutely loved every minute of it. This is a must see. Highly recommended.
Went there today with my wife and such a lovely place. The volunteer Tricia was very knowledgeable about the history and you could tell she was very passionate about the place. Thank you for spending the time talking to us and telling us the history of the graveyard and surrounding areas
Great small gaden for remembrance of the old outcast. I recall years ago when it looked like a derelict building site. Over many years this place has gained recognition and reshaped as a proper garden.. with many features and few shrines. The vigil happens every month on 23rd day..outside the gates that has many ribbons. But once in a while on special occasions we are allowed into the garden itself. Have been lucky to go inside years ago and recently in October 2022.
Both beautiful and sad. The history and pain that this tiny plot of land holds and can evoke in oneself is powerful.
Sad, yet sweet history. At least there was a place for these souls. The transformation into a garden commemorating those who were buried here is wonderful. Will definitely visit again.
Very moving place. Amazing story. The garden is a little sparse for good reason but well worth a visit if you're in the area.
Please visit this important sacred space to keep it from being developed. This was the final resting place for paupers and young sex workers dating back from the 14thC up to 1850. There is also a living memorial on the boundary fence which has thousands of ribbons, messages, photographs and poems in memory of loved ones and those which may have been forgotten. Add your prayers onto the fence.
