We had the 'Hassop' double room which was nice and big with a very large bed. The room was on the first floor overlooking the beer garden which was fine. Little to no noise from it at bed time. Didn't eat here but did have drinks in the bar on a couple of nights. The staff were efficient and friendly. Free parking is a bonus.
Firstly, I cannot fault the location of this pub / hotel. My friend and I were taking part in the Peak District Ultra Challenge and it was super central for the start and finish line in Bakewell.nnHowever, that is the only positive I have. I arrived to check in for a two night stay and was greeted as if I was an inconvenience, especially by whom I assume to be the landlady. I don't think I've ever met anyone as unpleasant and rude as her, shouting over the top of me at her staff members and sighing and tutting when checking me in. We had booked to have dinner there but I immediately decided against it and we had dinner at another pub nearby and it was delicious.nnI'm especially pleased that we made that decision, as breakfast on Sunday morning was absolutely disgusting. It was totally inedible in fact. Everything on my breakfast looked like it had just been shown the oven, rather than going inside it. When I complained to the member of staff about it he informed me that they were short staffed and that the person cooking the breakfasts was not a chef?!!!nnI was really upset as I was looking forward to my breakfast after completing a very long walk the day before and we then had to go elsewhere and pay out more money for something we could eat that wasn't going to make us sick.nnThe room was fine, basic and outdated, but clean enough. It was incredibly hot and there was no air con, but we were given a fan that helped a bit.
I visited the Castle on Saturday 30/8/25, I have eaten here quite a few times before and I was aware about registering my car number plate behind the bar. I had reserved a table to eat for 5 people at 7-30pm. I went to the bar to register my number plate and the barman made a note of it and said that he would enter the details after he had taken our order for drinks and food. The bar was quite busy so he took our order and I took our drinks back to the table. Imagine my shock when I received notification yesterday of a £100 fine for not complying with the parking rules. I have tried to telephone the Castle 18 times without success. It has left me extremely disappointed after my visit.
We picked this place for our fish n chips Friday outing.nGlad we did .nA lovely old building in a great location near the river Derwent.nApart from the chips being a bit crispy the food was absolutely delicious, and at the right price.nThe main reason we visited this place was because there’s a few reviews saying the landlady was less than welcoming and rude.nNot the case.nAll the staff were friendly, helpful, courteous and polite.dratt !!nWell worth a visit!
Visited here today for the first time today and will not be returning anytime soon. From the moment we walked into the pub, I felt a bizarre atmosphere and it got much worse once we met the landlady. I went to the pub on a Friday lunch time, it was moderately busy but not too bad. I parked at the car park and noticed the signs said to register your registration number at the bar so that’s the first thing I did. I was met by a very hostile landlady who told me to order my food first so that she knows I’m actually spending money in the pub and not just using the parking. I thought this was fair enough although a little passive aggressive, I went back to the table and ordered our food and drinks. I then went back up to the bar to collect the drinks I ordered and give my registration number for the car again. Whilst I was at the bar I observed the landlady interact with multiple paying customers and she was generally so hostile to everyone single customer and her staff. She was then arguing quite loudly with a staff member about putting discounts through the till incorrectly. The staff members themselves were friendly and welcoming however it appeared they were under some stress from the landlady and this was quite clear whilst observing.nnThe food was actually quite good and served piping hot, something I have come to expect when visiting a Greene King pub. The actual physical building is also nice and in an excellent location. It’s a shame that Greene King allow this toxic landlady to run this establishment into the ground as I doubt that it gets much repeat customers and the amount of poor reviews speak for themselves!nnOverall I would not recommend this pub and would choose one of the others in the area as there is plenty of nicer places to choose from whilst visiting the beautiful Peak District.
