Because I Like It

About

Because I Like It is a cafe and bistro, gift shop and gallery in the centre of the beautiful Peak District town of Bakewell, Derbyshire.

Story

Specialising in gluten-free meals and cakes and introducing a range of dairy-free and vegan cakes, we try to offer something you cannot get elsewhere in Bakewell.
Likewise, not only do we have art from respected local and UK artists, but we have a range of Asian art from Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia, buying direct from the artists to givr them a fair price and to keep these stunning pieces affordable for our customers.
Our gift shop sells almost exclusively hand-made crafts from the UK and also some fair trade lines from overseas.
We believe that there should be a balance between helping our fellow countrymen and helping the people we have met overseas, many of whom live well below the breadline.

We have introduced tapas from Thursday to Sunday, which, if popular, we will extend throughout the week. This is again filling a gap in the market in Bakewell and we hope it will appeal to our local regulars as well as our guests from further afield.
Feedback is always welcome, so please let Nigel or Val know your comments.

We went in search of a cosy cafe to rest of wary legs and get a spot for tea and some cake. We ordered Bakewell tart (we were in Bakewell so we felt it was a must) and carrot cake. Both were very good. The place itself was, what I'd best describe it as, eclectic with an upstairs gallery and gift shop all in one.

My partner and I enjoyed a vegan afternoon tea here last Friday afternoon. I contacted the cafe prior to my visit to enquire and received a response straight away. Nigel & Val were most hospitable and made us feel very welcome. Our afternoon tea was ready as soon as we arrived. We were amazed with the selection of delicious sandwiches and cakes. My partner was also thrilled that they provided vegan cream for the scones. She commented that it was the best afternoon tea she has ever had. We will be returning soon for more vegan delights.

Good service, excellent soup with chunks of tasty vegetables, not the customary wall paper paste you get these days! Only let down by dry white bread (not fresh) with soup.
