Nice location and staff were friendly & welcoming. Unfortunately, the room was extremely cold and shivered most of the night. Radiator in bathroom was cold, single glazed window that didn’t close properly, so passing traffic below the window was noisy. A freezing cold draft coming in through large gap under the door, which we had to block with a towel and minimal bedding, despite it being mid February. Thankfully we had taken a thick fur blanket, which helped keep our dogs warm on the floor. The room was not very clean and there was black mould on the walls. Wish we’d read the reviews before booking! It is obvious many people have highlighted the same issues for quite some time but, the owners don’t appear to be making any effort to address them, in order to make their customer’s stay a nicer, more comfortable experience. Tea and coffee making facilities were a bonus but, were little comfort for the night we had. A little money spent improving the windows, heating and housekeeping, would make this place amazing.
This is a lovely little pub that I often frequent after a walk in the area. It has good vegan food and beers and it is dog friendly. The staff are always friendly and helpful, but can 'fill up' quickly around lunch time, especially at weekends.
Took a drive over the Moors. Been past this pub many a time but never called in. Fantastic warming atmosphere & very hospitable staff. Had the Diamond Gold lager...crisp & great flavour. Mrs P had the chargrilled Chicken, Avocado & Mustard dressing toastie with fries whereas I didn't!!!. I did my 'Man vs Food' bit & went for the 'in yer face' mixed grill, Rump steak, Gammon, Black Pudding etc...on this occasion I'm pleased to say 'Man won'. Lovely location & a very welcome treat...in the words of Arnie...'well be back'!!!. Well done Black Dog.
Lovely cosy little place, usually rammed in summer but nice and peaceful in winter. Only had a drink but will stop for food next time. Update: revisited in mid Jan for a Sunday family meal, and was not disappointed at all. The waitress even suggested options for a Sunday lunch we had not seen that brought the overall bill down. Very impressed and will definitely visit again.
Called in for an impromptu meal and was pleasantly surprised. Food was delicious, good portions and fairly priced. Staff were both helpful and friendly ten out of ten! Will definitely be back.
Friendly hosts & staff. Lovely country pub and good, fairly priced grub. Double room cumfy, warm and clean... but "tired". The window needs attention and areas of the walls require a lick of paint. Great area for walks... I enjoyed my stay.
Only had a drink and a dessert then went for a short walk. Menu was varied and well priced and food delicious. Will definitely go again. Beer surprisingly very good.Service: 5/5
Been going to the black dog for years but after tonight may not eat there again. On many occasions I've had garlic and Stilton mushrooms and a bowl of chips. First the mushrooms came in a tiny bowl compared to normal with one small piece of garlic bread, this was £5.95, second the chips were in a tiny bowl, very bitty and obviously frozen, these were £3. So disappointed and annoyed with myself for not complaining. On the plus side my OH had a flatbread that he really enjoyed. The drinks were good but had gone up by about £4 since last time we were there which wasn't that long ago but the main thing was that my meal was pitiful and I could've made better at home. Nearly £10 for a tiny bowl of mushrooms and a small portion of chips is ridiculous. Walkability: Lovely views
Went for lunch. Typical pub grub. Okay but not amazing. Served a bread crust with my toastie and was tasteless. My dad had a fire cracker wrap which he enjoyed. Decor very tired and dated.Service: 3/5
Went for a meal 2 out of 3 good. One could of broke the plate with some parts of mix grill meat over cooked. Would go again but not order the mix grillRooms: 4/5
