Belper North Mill

About

The Mill was built in 1804 by William Strutt and is one of the oldest surviving examples of an industrialised iron framed, 'fire-proof' building.

Story

Jedediah Strutt began building mills here from 1776. The original North Mill was completed in 1786 but was destroyed by fire in 1803. Its replacement, the present mill, was built in 1804 on the earlier mill's foundations by Jedediah's eldest son William Strutt and is one of the oldest surviving examples of an industrialised iron framed, 'fire-proof' building and is now recognised as one of the most important industrial buildings in the world, and as such, is a central attraction in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Construction
The mill was one of the most technically advanced building of its time, incorporating an iron frame and brick arches, to make the building "Fireproof". Considerable thought was given to the individual building components. For instance, iron beams were 'turtle-backed' that is, deeper in the middle where they were under the greatest stress.

It is a grade I listed building.

The Mill houses a museum which shows the story of cotton and the growth of the industrial revolution. There are events organised at the Mill throughout the year.

I visited without knowing anything about north mill. I was welcomed by 2 lovely women in the visitor centre, one who gave me 'the tour'. She was knowledgeable and informative and it was really interesting to hear about the history of the building and the cotton trade in the local area. The bit of the mill open to the public is not a large area but it's close to a historic area of houses, the old school, riverside gardens etc. Which is also well worth doing and I was armed with town maps from the centre to help me on my way. If this review dosen't spark your interest then knowing that it is part of a world heritage site should! One other thing, the £5.00 entrance fee I paid is valid for a year for any adult to use. It was a great visit.

Stumbled upon this place quite accidentally as we were driving by. The bridge over the river offered a great photo op so we stopped for a look. We discovered the museum was opening in a few minutes and decided to check it out. First of all the price was right ! The tour was guided by a man well versed in all aspects of the place and the whole tour proved to be very interesting. He also gave us some information on the rest of the town which we took in after our mill tour. A good way to spend the day.

Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site An informative and educational visit to the above proved to be a great day out learning about local history and the Strutts family. Great to visit as a kind of family tour of local mills, the history all ties in together nicely to form the bigger picture of the mills.

Friendly staff and very informative tour. The kids were able to try their hand at carding cotton and operating knitting and spinning machines from the 19th century, all under the careful supervision of a knowledgeable guide. Recommended for grown ups and families with kids over seven-ish.

A fascinating museum highlighting the history of the valley and the importance of the Strutt family to Belper and the surrounding area. The two comments from Glenn Hibbert and Dennis Henshaw refer to the East Mill, i.e. the large red brick building and not to the North Mill where the museum is sited.
