Assheton Arms

About

Assheton Arms is the Seafood Pub Company’s flagship venue, and has won a wide range of regional and industry awards, recently given 5* accommodation.

Story

The multi-award winning Assheton Arms at Downham is an historic Grade II listed village pub in the untouched conservation village of Downham near Clitheroe. Boasting stunning views across the Ribble Valley to the legendary Pendle Hill, the uniqueness of the village has made Downham a popular TV and film location since the 1960’s with productions including Whistle Down the Wind, Born and Bred and The Secret of Crickley Hall filmed in the village. This traditional 18th century inn, which is listed in the Good Food Guide and was named County Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide, is perfect for family meals out. It comes alive in the evening with a great atmosphere where you can expect the highest quality, locally sourced food, cooked and presented to perfection.

Chefs at the Assheton Arms use the finest ingredients, including fish sourced by Chris Neve from the Fleetwood coast, meat from Roaming Roosters and vegetables from Lady Clitheroe’s garden. An extensive specials board is updated daily.

The two-storey, 130-cover Assheton Arms is the flagship venue in the Seafood Pub Company’s group. A recent refurbishment of the venue has refreshed the feel of the stylish restaurant whilst retaining its strong identity as a community village inn. Guests are now able to enjoy an extended stay at The Assheton Arms with our new bedrooms and cottages. Located in Ash Tree Cottage and the former Post Office in Downham, our 12 bedrooms include two family rooms sleeping up to four people.

Combining a truly unique location with stunning views of Pendle Hill, our outstanding food offering and excellent customer service, the new accommodation at Assheton Arms is the perfect choice for somewhere to stay in the Ribble Valley. It is ideally suited to families looking for a weekend break and for corporate clients visiting businesses in locations such as Clitheroe, Blackburn or Burnley.

Great pub in a lovely location, it's perfect to come to when just finishing a walk in the country and surrounding areas. The venue itself is small and picturesque, the staff are very friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic, I can really recommend the chicken, ham hock and leek pie, and the turkey roast dinner was fantastic too. Could happily spend hours here in front of the fire with a pint! And it is dog friendly too in case you're out walking with pets. Cannot comment on the rooms to stay in as we only had food but can't wait to come back! Brilliant place!

Beautiful pub in an even more beautiful place. It's a little on the pricey side but it's worth it for the location. Downham is one of my favourite places in north west England and a must for anyone considering visiting. It's picturesque and quiet. There is a fantastic 7 Mike circular walk close by too.

We had a fabulous (afternoon) meal here on New Year's Eve. The pub itself is very rustic and sympathetically decorated to make the most of its position in a lovely village. The food was absolutely superb and the staff were extremely polite and attentive. The only problem was that we waited an inordinate amount of time for our main meal. The waiter was very apologetic and brought over a round of free drinks which suggests that this was both an unusual occurrence and something which they wanted to make up for. We will certainly go back to eat there though - if only so that I can edit this review to add that fifth star.
