The History of Aldwark Manor

The intriguing history surrounding Aldwark Manor and it's role through the ages has done much to shape its unique character. Both the Manor and it's grounds remain seemingly untouched by time and one can imagine history's past events being brought to life once more.

The name Aldwark is derived from the Old English Saxon words ‘eald’ and ‘weorc’, meaning ‘old fortification’. This may refer to the Roman station that is thought to have been stationed on the River Ure, now the point of the only privately owned Toll Bridge in England.

1865 Lord Walsingham commissioned the building of a magnificent residence as a wedding present for his eldest daughter. The finest craftsmen of the day were employed and their work, particularly the beams and the plasterwork took five years to complete.

In the early 1900’s Possession passed from the Walsingham family to the Gunters, who used it as a country home.

1939-1945 Requisitioned by the Home Office at the start of the 2nd World War, the Manor provided accommodation for the Canadian Air Force who flew from the nearby air base of RAF Linton. While staying at Aldwark, Wing Commander Guy Gibson spent time planning the legendary 'Dam Busters' raid.

1945 After the war, the Gunter family returned but decided against taking up permanent residence. It remained empty for a period of time, until it was acquired by the County Council, who turned it in to a school for young offenders.

1978 A group of businessmen recognised the potential of the Manor and it’s 100 acre parkland, planted 63 types of magnificent trees, and embarked on a period of modernisation to a country house hotel. The golf course was laid out sympathetically to preserve the natural features and take advantage of natural water hazards.

2002 The Manor was acquired by Marston Hotels and underwent progressive improvements whilst preserving its original features. We currently have 53 letting bedrooms, which include Standard, Deluxe, VIQ, Four Poster rooms and Suites.

You can be sure that, whether your room looks east to the Hambleton Hills or West over the River Ouse, our desire is to make your stay as comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable as possible so that you will wish to return.

2006 Aldwark Manor was acquired by Qhotels.

Beautiful building and decor throughout. Feels very grand and special and kept the manor style. Drinking areas are lovely lounges with sofas and high wing or tub chairs with lit fireplaces and candles in window. Room was clean, spacious & overlooked golf course. Comfortable bed, powerful shower and large bath. It was very quiet, we didn't hear any noise so got plenty of sleep! Food (breakfast, lunch & dinner) delicious. good choice of wines and drinks - albeit the drinks are expensive (£8 for medium glass of wine) which is the only thing that needs improving here. Spa and treatments are excellent with a wonderful relaxing area with beds, cushions, bean bags. Didn't use golf facilities but the gym is well equipped. Staff are friendly and attentive, and food service was good. I had a card and chocolates put in my room for my birthday which was a lovely touch. An excellent stay. fully recommend.

Lovely winter weekend. Kids loved the pool. Staff were great. Inclusive meal on first night was excellent. Second night was a bit lacklustre. It's a bit of a trail to York but fine if you're planning a full day out.

Really nice place set in the middle of nowhere. With a big open fire and lots of cozy sofas and chairs dotted around, its easy to losse a couple of hours doing nothing. The 18 hole golf course has an interesting layout crossing over a road and a river. When we played it was a dull wet day and the course wasn't at its best. Look forward to trying it again in the summer. Fantastic spa area with everything you would expect to find at a spa. The restaurant has a modern feel serving really nice food, the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the food. Our room was a reasonable size with nice view over the grounds. I really can't wait to stay here again.

Overnight spa break. Good value but a few areas to improve (not the treatments... They were lovely). Room also lovely. Staff all very helpful but some seem inexperienced. Long wait at breakfast for replenishment of eggs, sausages etc Asked waiter and was told if they noticed they were empty they would bring fresh! I assumed me telling him might prompt this but it didn't. Waited 10mins and Asked manager... They were refilled in minutes. Service at evening meal was also a bit slow. Food was good. Also by end of day pool changing room needed a good clean and loo roll etc needed refilled. Good overall stay but just attention to a few details would make it very good

Great New Year staff helpful though the restaurant staff were really good helping to get us moved from the noisiest room I've ever been in as we were over the kitchen, & the extractor was right outside our window & woke us at 5 45 when the started breakfast. Thanks again to the to the restaurant staff as we didn't get much help from reception. Other than that we had a fabulous time as we had taken our dog & he was made most welcome.
