The History of Aldwark Manor
The intriguing history surrounding Aldwark Manor and it's role through the ages has done much to shape its unique character. Both the Manor and it's grounds remain seemingly untouched by time and one can imagine history's past events being brought to life once more.
The name Aldwark is derived from the Old English Saxon words ‘eald’ and ‘weorc’, meaning ‘old fortification’. This may refer to the Roman station that is thought to have been stationed on the River Ure, now the point of the only privately owned Toll Bridge in England.
1865 Lord Walsingham commissioned the building of a magnificent residence as a wedding present for his eldest daughter. The finest craftsmen of the day were employed and their work, particularly the beams and the plasterwork took five years to complete.
In the early 1900’s Possession passed from the Walsingham family to the Gunters, who used it as a country home.
1939-1945 Requisitioned by the Home Office at the start of the 2nd World War, the Manor provided accommodation for the Canadian Air Force who flew from the nearby air base of RAF Linton. While staying at Aldwark, Wing Commander Guy Gibson spent time planning the legendary 'Dam Busters' raid.
1945 After the war, the Gunter family returned but decided against taking up permanent residence. It remained empty for a period of time, until it was acquired by the County Council, who turned it in to a school for young offenders.
1978 A group of businessmen recognised the potential of the Manor and it’s 100 acre parkland, planted 63 types of magnificent trees, and embarked on a period of modernisation to a country house hotel. The golf course was laid out sympathetically to preserve the natural features and take advantage of natural water hazards.
2002 The Manor was acquired by Marston Hotels and underwent progressive improvements whilst preserving its original features. We currently have 53 letting bedrooms, which include Standard, Deluxe, VIQ, Four Poster rooms and Suites.
You can be sure that, whether your room looks east to the Hambleton Hills or West over the River Ouse, our desire is to make your stay as comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable as possible so that you will wish to return.
2006 Aldwark Manor was acquired by Qhotels.
