What a fantastic and remarkable gem this place is! I must admit, when I first saw the entrance and considered the price of admission, I had low expectations and thought it would be just a place to spend a few hours. However, I was pleasantly surprised and proven completely wrong! The museum is incredibly vast and offers so much to explore.nnThere is a wealth of informative exhibits and a variety of interactive activities. The Victorian Street exceeded my expectations, and visitors can even purchase sweets in an old-fashioned sweet shop while dressed in period costumes.nnIn the courtyard, children can enjoy playing a variety of vintage-style games, with the hoop game appearing to be particularly popular.nnWe happened to visit on a day when a show was being performed, and it was absolutely delightful. The show was both educational and entertaining, and everyone in the audience actively participated as it took us on a journey around the grounds, even experiencing a hot air balloon ride of sorts. It was heartwarming to see people of all ages laughing and enjoying the performance.nnAlthough strollers are not permitted inside the museum, they kindly provide a variety of baby carriers free of charge for visitors to use during their visit.nnI am eagerly looking forward to returning to this wonderful place in the future!
I recently revisited the Castle Museum and noticed there’s been a price increase since my last visit, but the ticket now includes entry for the entire year, which makes it great value if you plan to return.nnAs always, the museum offers plenty of fascinating historical elements to explore. One of the highlights for me was the mock-up of the old town—it's so immersive watching it transition from day to night, complete with a thunderstorm! It really brings the history to life in a unique and engaging way.nnOverall, it’s a great place to learn and experience history, and the annual pass makes it worth the visit.
At £17 each we hoped this would be fairly good value and we're not disappointed. Your ticket actually allows you free return visits too.nnThe extensive galleries and semi interactive wings of this pretty huge facility is extremely well assembled and laid out in a way that has you almost wondering if you missed a section down an alley or corridor. It is vast but not cavernous like the Natural history museum in London.nThe replica streets have some genuine shops and pub frontages as well as really furniture actually used by locals over a period of several hundred years.nnThe wartime displays and the stories of the characters are well produced. My personal favourite parts were the train carriage replica look under the seat cushions! and the projections of the prisoners in the old jail.nnThis is probably the best museum I have been in for a very long time and definitely worth the price of admission.nnAllow yourself 2 hours to really explore the entire collection. The highlight of our trip to York.
Absolute must visit whilst in York. Me and my partner love history and spent ages reading and looking at all the various items over the years! Ghost week was also going on, so hunting for all the ghosts in the street was good fun not just for kids! Cafe was a tad expensive but the staff everywhere were so so lovely! % would recommend!
Review of Castle MuseumnnThe Castle Museum sits proudly on a hill, offering a superb panoramic view of the city that sets the mood even before you step inside. The buildings have an old, rich vibe that draws you in with their captivating historic style, which truly enhances the overall experience.nnAs a former prison, the museum gave me pause to reflect on its dark past and the lives of those who were held here, including notable figures like Guy Fawkes and the Quakers. This historical depth adds a hauntingly real touch to the visit, making it more than just a visual journey.nnThe exhibits are incredibly well-organized, making it easy to navigate through the various sections. From the relics of war, such as helmets, gas masks, and armors, to everyday items like Dutch pots and pressure cookers, the displays are thoughtfully curated to immerse visitors in the past. I especially appreciated the use of holograms and videos, which provided an engaging way to learn about the artifacts and their histories.nnOne of the highlights for me was the interactive trench exhibit, although I found it a bit cramped. It’s a unique addition that adds to the immersive experience, even if it’s not perfectly suited for everyone.nnThe museum is impeccably clean and well-maintained, reflecting the care that goes into preserving both the exhibits and the visitor experience. While I didn’t interact much with the staff, the overall service felt smooth and efficient.nnI highly recommend the Castle Museum to history enthusiasts and families alike. It offers a unique glimpse into the past with a mix of somber reflection and educational engagement. Whether you’re interested in military history, everyday life in bygone eras, or simply enjoying a good view, this museum has something to offer.
