About

The Yorkshire Museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils.

Story

The Yorkshire Museum sits in the heart of the York Museum Gardens in the centre of York.

The museum was opened in 1830 by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and was one of the first purpose-built museums in the country. On 1 August 2010, the museum reopened following a nine-month £2 million refurbishment project.

The museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils, in exciting displays with changing exhibitions. There are also regular events, lectures and activities to enjoy.

Lovely historic gardens and lovely to stroll around the Yorkshire museum and ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. We went to the Ghosts after Dark even to see the ghost figures illuminated and hear tales about famous historic ghosts and characters such as Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes. A great evening finished off with a glass of mulled wine at Thors in the gardens.
It was something out of a nice book, everyone was sat and going about their business of enjoying the park like it was a movie set. I really liked it.
Fantastic Wedding Venue in the Hospitium. Lighting up the ruins after dark would allow for some fantastic photographs of the wedding party and add to the experience.
One of the highlights of York City Centre!nnAlways a lovely place to sit either to have a chat, for a picnic or even to sketch your surroundings. My partner and I went on our first date here two years ago and we just got a flat together!nnUsually have events on and close to many things in the city!nnThere are also lots of squirrels who are quite friendly, I made friends with one who I called Cecile and we fed it some popcorn
We couldn’t find information about what or why this area was. Which was a real shame.nPlenty of benches, the ghost tour was brilliant too.
