Story

DIG is a hands-on archaeological adventure giving kids the chance to become trainee ‘diggers’ and discover the most exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history!

With four special in-door excavation pits, all based on real-life digs in the city and filled with replica Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, children can grab a trowel and explore how people lived in these times.

Starting your training in our Briefing Hut you will learn about about the world of archaeology & what you will be doing during your DIG adventure.

Once you’re briefed it’s time to visit the DIG pits and start uncovering the past!

This is where the fun really starts! Kids can dig down deep (in our synthetic, no mess soil) to discover artefacts from the four major periods of York’s fascinating history. An Archaeologist is on hand to answer your questions on your finds & help you piece together what it would have been like to live in past.

Kids can get hands on with history and actually touch finds from previous YAT digs, including pottery, bone and even antlers! You will discover what these artefacts tell us about the lives of people who used them.

This was an excellent tour and very interactive. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and can answer any child's curious question. We booked online which was recommended as it does get very busy. Only downside was each group is only allocated 20 minutes for the dig site.

Great experience. Superb presenter in Freya. Environment was too crowded with too many people in the group and venue v cold! Other than that, v interesting and fun.

The kids loved this. My seven year old daughter actually exclaimed "Daddy, this is really fun!" as we dug around in the rubber crumb. Not sure there is a high amount of interest for serious archaeology buffs though
