Ate here recently with my family on a Sunday after being recommended it by my eldest child and her partner. The pub itself is lovely and quirky and the staff seemed friendly, although it was busy so they didn't have much time to stop. Service wasn't fast, but we appreciated the rest between courses, so for us it was good, and we weren't in a rush to be anywhere else. Also, it isn't a fast food place, so I wouldn't expect or want rushed service. The food tasted lovely. Apart from one fish and chips, we all had a roast 1 lamb, 1 chicken and 3 pork belly. The chips were great, as was the battered fish. The meat portions for the lamb and chicken were quite small for ~£20, but it was all well cooked and the portions for the sides/potatoes and veg were generous although they're obviously the cheaper ingredients from the meal, so overall it was enough food. The puds were lovely and good sized portions. My one reservation and the reason for 4 rather than 5 stars, is that we were seated where we could see the chef and he used his hands/fingers to plate up all the food meat, veg, fish, etc... everything was picked up using his fingers/ hands and arranged on the plates, which was a bit off-putting as I couldn't see how often he was washing his hands and at one point after we'd been served our food, he wiped his face with the side of his hand and I couldn't see if he then washed them or not. I almost left 3 stars simply because of this, but felt that, on balance, that would've been too harsh, although it does put me off eating there again.
First visit last night and booked to go again before we left. Beautiful country pub which I can imagine would be great in winter with a log fire going and summer with the amazing outside tables. You have to see them to understand. Service was friendly and relaxed with exactly the right balance of being attentive but not rushed. Head chef Dave and his team are at the top of their game. Starters of ham hock terrine and chicken liver parfait looked beautiful and tasted great. Mains of skate wing and goan curry were out of this world. Clever use of local suppliers, imagination and a whole lot of skill mean the kitchen are sending out really great food. Prices are spot on as well. Can't wait to come back or our Sunday roast.
Overall 4 stars. I have stayed in the Five Bells part of the chain and was interested in staying here. The room Frederick was very nice, spacious and clean. We didn't see any ghost though! I like the décor and vibe of the rooms. The food was very nicely presented ordering chicken as a main and crumble for dessert. I done a mid week deal so nearly everything was included in the package- the room, dinner and breakfast just paying for drinks separate. Mulled cider at the bar was very nice also. Overall a nice experience for an over night stay.
Really sad to say I’m very disappointed. I used to really like going here but over the last few times I’ve gone, we’ve had very bad experiences. We put it down to being maybe a one off but sadly not. The owners are very nice people and I would love to say it’s great but hopefully some honest feedback will help them get the place in order again. Some staff members aren’t up to scratch and frankly don’t seem to care. We had some BBQ food during an event and my partners food came out raw in the middle. Explained to the staff they agreed it wasn’t right. Ran out of food and came back with a burnt alternative which didn’t get eaten. We put it down to a bad day went in there a few weeks back and told the staff we were looking for food get menus etc and waited 30 mins to get served ended up leaving having drunk our drinks and asked again for food and left shortly after to find somewhere else. And went in there again to to try some food ended up having pizza which was under cooked doughy and tomato puree had not seen hardly any heat. Really poor, was going to ask them to put it back under the heat but felt all a bit embarrassed to have to ask as clear as did it wasn’t cooked enough so we won’t be trying again. I’m sure depending what you order you might get better luck as other reviews seem positive but really it’s pretty basic stuff to get right. We left feeling that we wished we gone somewhere else so we could have enjoyed a nice meal. As I said owners are great and location is nice but food is very poor.
Amazing food. Great service. Beautiful old building with all the fabulous quirks that comes with that age of a building like that. Would definitely recommend & look forward to visiting again.
A great, traditional Kentish pub. We had a good meal, very tasty and not too much. The setting is very characterful with lots of curios dotted around. Staff very friendly and efficient.
Very nice food & friendly staff at the bar. Seating wasn’t good but we did turn up at last minute so was to be expected. The Sea Bass and seaweed mash was amazing.
The welcome and drinks were great, unfortunately the Sunday roast, lamb and beef specifically let the experience down. the cut was an inch thick and was tough as old boots, upon a quite chat with the server we were served a timely replacement, again tough. so we ate the meal, waited 20mins to order a pudding, the pudding was served within 20mins of ordering only to be told the table needs to be vacated by 14:30hrs, it was 14:10hrs!! really. Look, its trying to be bistro posh restaurant food where in reality its ok pub grub at bistro prices. Great location, nice people, service and timing lets you all down, an easy fix, limit your covers.
Had a fabulous lunch there yesterday for an xmas treat , the whole place felt magical the staff where 1st class and the food was fantastic, thank you. Will be definitely going again ,
Beautiful location friendly staff, amazing food so delicious fresh & good quality produce. Lovely loos! I will definitely recommend to friends & go back.Service: 5/5
