Lovely pub building in a stunning setting. The garden is very pretty with a pond too, so worth sitting outside of you can. The staff member that served us was pleasant and friendly. The food was good and for a small menu, there was good variety. It perhaps tool a little longer than one might have grown to expect in the modern age, but we were in no rush and it suited the relaxed surroundings to not be rushed.
It’s a nice comfy inn at a small town Smarden near Headcorn in Kent. Food is good but unfortunately not served every night - just Wednesday to Saturday night. The hosts are responsive if there’s an issue my bathroom had a leak when I was there. Overall a pleasant place to stay.
When we checked into our room we were blown away with it's beauty and rustic appeal, because it is a very old building. We were in Excalibur. The noise through the floor from the bar is very loud so if you require an early night, I would choose a different room. Our dinner was very nice so I would recommend eating there although they don't seem to have a lot of staff and so the poor waitress was also working behind the bar and was very stretched. Service was slow. On lying on the bed, ready to settle down, I found the mattress to dip to the point of almost touching the bedframe. We tried switching ends of the bed and switching sides but I could not get comfortable and told my other half I would sleep on the floor. She said no and I told her I couldn't sleep on this bed. Upon going downstairs to express this at 11:20pm I was met with a less than happy owner who expressed that, "it's a new mattress" "I can't see a problem with it" "I checked the room and it was fine" "no one else has complained all summer." After I encouraged the slight elderly owner to try the mattress herself, she proceeded to weakly press on the edge and then sat there not even where we pointed out where the sinkhole was. She then asked her son to do it. He sat momentarily and then jumped back up and shrugged. We weren't respected as customers and I was made to feel like I was making a fuss about nothing and I was made to feel very uncomfortable and like I was lying. She did then offer another room. This was her best room allegedly. I question why this room was empty if the mediocre room we were in was busy all summer, although that is not relevantto my complaint. The bed here was firmer but by this point we had reached the point where we were made to feel too unwelcome to stay. We paid for our dinner and drove home, getting there after midnight. This was preferable. Laying on that mattress for a short time and trying to persevere caused my back and shoulder to ache. I would not recommend staying in this room. I would also suggest that if you want to be made to feel welcome, you should perhaps visit a different Inn. If they have been there for 12 years I would perhaps suggest to take a customer service course. We are lucky we didn't travel for more than an hour because had we have come from out of area I would not have been happy.
Had an evening meal there which I was very disappointed with, it was like it had been defrosted & microwaved, it was dry & tasteless, I did mention it to the host who just said sorry. Well I would Not recommend their food. Plenty of other places to eat
