Did not stay here went for a drink to this iconic place . It was on a valentines night. There was some effort of plastic flowers. They had no wine, gin was served instead out of an odd bottle. My friend had lemonade served from a pop bottle. The bar guy was clothed in dirty t-shirt and had dirty hands. The place was filthy and run down. It was so sad to see how these owners were letting this place go to wrack and ruin. Now heard the place had fire safety issues not surprised. Hope some decent people take it over and bring it back too the gorgeous place it was.
I love the Talbot, it is pricey, but it is worth it as a special treat just for the atmosphere. It has not been ruined by modernisation, the eating areas encompass the traditional with a modern day slant. If you ever get the opportunity to go upstairs, it is fascinating. The history has been preserved so well, centuries old beautiful carved wood panels, sloping oak floors, tapestries. Make a promise to yourself to visit for a Christmas drink, it is charming.
It was a nice place to put our heads down for the night, I think the new owner could bring this great building back up to scratch again, easy to get to and alot of places to eat and drink around it. Tidy enough rooms, only gripe was no hot water but it was getting fixed and the manager knocked some money off for the inconvenience. The pub was cost and was well stocked with decent prices
Don’t worry about the supposed ghosts, worry about your safety. Booked a stay there last Saturday and arrived two hours after check in to be told by a confused looking guy that the room wasn’t ready as they were behind with cleaning. He also told us that they had system issues so could only take cash. They have since taken the fee so we would have basically paid double Most disturbingly, he said that all the keys had been stolen and he had the only key so we would have to inform him of our comings and goings. As I was there for drinks with family, I didn’t have faith that anyone would be about to let us back in to both the hotel, let alone the room. We decided not to stay as it didn’t feel right or safe. Not welcoming, shabby and with a weird vibe to the whole place. We didn’t see the room and I don’t think the other people who tried to book in did either. It’s a shame but we definitely made the right call in not staying. I hope it gets bette but for now, I would give it a miss and go elsewhere.
Honestly the worst hotel stay I've ever had. Booked in advance on Booking.com with check in between 10pm and 11pm. Arrived at 10:40 and there was no-one at the reception, rang the bell and called the phone with no answer until someone appeared 20 minutes later looking incredibly confused, who told us that they had no rooms available and that they had been having "internet issues" recently and bookings weren't going through, showed confirmation email and they didn't seem fussed at all. He then told us that they close at 8pm, even though we were able to book late check in and their online information states they are open to 11. We then had to wait for him to get the night manager who no-one seemed to know existed in the morning who ensured us that we would stay there that night. We didn't get into a room until after midnight as they were moving furniture, vacuuming and bringing up a space heater into what must have been a store room with a bed in it. We were then assured by the night manager that we would sort a discount in the morning as he looked us up in the system and found our booking straight away, even after being told it hadn't come through. When we were actually in the room, there were: - Screws all over the bathroom floor - No hot water in the bath/shower - Broken, mouldy bath/shower - Broken flush on the toilet - No actual lock on the door, only a chain on the inside - A broken space heater on full blast leant against a wooden cupboard with the window to the high street left wide open After actually managing to get some sleep, there was somehow an odd stain on my clothes that had been left in the room. We went downstairs at 10am and couldn't find anyone, and had to wait for over an hour to have an actual room made up by housekeeping, which was only slightly better, with a broken window pane with paper taped over it, a mouldy bath and almost no toilet paper I've now seen a review about bed bugs in the same room. Upon trying to check out at 9:30am we again found no-one available anywhere, and after calling and ringing the bell multiple times and searching for staff we eventually had to leave a note and our keys behind explaining what had happened on the back of a food hygiene level 3 article that had been printed out and placed everywhere. After all of these all we received was a discount on one night and a free cup of coffee while we waited for them to make an actual room. Do not stay here if you can avoid it, you'll just leave more stressed than when you went in.
Stopped here on the 4th September as a wedding guest. Room was disgusting : - bed bugs -noisy rooms -said breakfast was included, went down in morning and was told there was no staff -no toilet roll -bedding from previous people was threw on floor outside room -bathroom looked as if it had never been cleaned -and to top it off was sent a parking ticket after being told if we put our reg in machine you would not get one a family member had got in touch with the hotel direct and was assured it would be sorted. Still now to this day it has not been sorted, and we are now receiving letters from debt management companies saying they are taking it further. Can’t get in contact with hotel after calling and emailing numerous times.
I was there for 1 night with my dog and I've never been so fearful of my life. I asked to be moved to another room, I got slung another key by their colleague. Went into the other room, it was warmer than the first, so I settled. Later on that evening I felt bitey feelings in my leg and back. Low and behold, I was not on my own in the room. The bedbugs really drove me mad that night. I will never forget it. Other things about that room ill never forget, the taps in the sink not working, the toilet not flushing, the only tap that worked was the bath's hot tap. Seriously, I've never felt so terrified.. Good luck to anyone staying in room 29 again. It will be one of the worst experiences of your life.
The hotel is very ran down, had a leak in the room. Our room was 19, however I went into it knowing it was a dive. Shame, its beautiful in terms of it being a 400 year old building. Hope money is put into this hotel before it fully falls into disrepair. However staff are great and quick to help us. Bed was very comfortable for our 2 night stay. Room is meant to be haunted, no dead people in sight for our visit.
Room had been cleaned on arrival, no toilet roll, no tea makinghad not been cleaned either loud music all night, bed was falling apart, should have a complete overhaul. Did not enjoy the stay at all which is a shame as the building could be lovely. No covid regulations being taken.Rooms: 1/5
Out of the many hotels I have spent nights in, this has to be the worst of them all. First warning was customers complaining about their rooms as I arrived. Unfortunately I had no where else to go. The room was quite simply a mess. The carpet was filthy. Bed was extremely uncomfortable, bathroom fan on all night. No working TV remote. No kettle or coffee facilities and walls which had more filled in holes than a dart board. I could not sleep there, especially whilst flies roamed the only working light bulb. I'd have been better off sleeping in a tent, although I had a roof over my head in the rain which is the only positive.
