The River Cafe Glasbury

About

The River Cafe is a licensed cafe-bar-restaurant located across the boatyard with the Wye Valley Canoe Centre. Accommodation above the cafe & 5* bunkhouse

Story

We are open from 0900 and people gather here for an Illy coffee, a pastry or a bacon sandwich before going out on the river. The outdoor mob are welcome and we are ideally situated for those doing the Wye Valley Walk and we are on the Sustran cycle network (route 8 and 42) for those on two wheels. Our customer base is probably more varied than anywhere else I can think of! We are not just a hot chocolate and a muffin sort of a place. AA Gill the infamous food critic awarded us 4 stars and during the Hay Literature Festival we welcome many well known faces to eat, to relax and enjoy fresh food cooked daily by our wonderful kitchen crew. You can come in a suit or a swimsuit, a pirate outfit or shorts and flip flops. The whole ethos of the cafe is that it should never feel pretentious but should welcome everyone!

Staying nearby at Foyles of Glasbury, there are limited options in the area within walking distance. We stopped into The River Cafe expecting the usual fare of sandwiches and chips, and were pleasantly surprised by the depth and quality of the food offering. Operating effectively a restaurant, guesthouse, and community hub, it still manages to offer tasty food at a great price, well presented and with a smile. The views outside onto the River Wye are beatiful, unfortunately it was early February so no chance to admire them from outside! Would love to return when next in the area.

One of my favourite places to eat and the River Wye setting is ideal. A short but perfectly formed menu reasonably priced. Love the fish and chips. If you love fresh fish this is the place to go. The scampi and pea starter was delicious and the chicken brest salad not bad either! Another very good evening at the River Cafe, very busy and lively. Soup, squid and goats cheese to start followed by lamb, pork and hake. Together with a bowl of crispy chips to share.
