The people are pleasant, but there's no sophistication or style, nor rustic charm about this place. The decor, if you can call it that, is utilitarian. In my room, the wardrobe was a rail in the corner. There's an en suite shower room with fluffy white towels, tea/coffee making gear, a TV and a comfortable bed, though, so if all you want is somewhere to sleep the night, what more can you expect for the price? You can get a good pint in the Spartan bar below but if you want dinner, it has to come from the associated fish and chip joint which serves a range of other things as well, (pies, sausages, curry etc) all with chips. Breakfast is continental buffet but when I was there the toaster and the hot water dispenser were both not working. They said they had been told I didn't want breakfast, which raises two thoughts. First, who would have told them that? Second, presumably nobody else was staying, or nobody wanted breakfast. In either case, why was all the breakfast stuff (including several loaves of bread for toasting) set out for nobody to eat?

Stayed 2 days to reduce work commute from England to Abergavenny. Enjoyed it. It's a hotel/Bnb with a pub. Warning re journey: very windy roads, would be dangerous & more stressful in wet/frosty conditions. But gorgeous green and mountainous scenery. As soon as you walk in, there's a small bar straightahead. +ves: Free parking. Very friendly & welcoming staff e.g. Hazel & locals. From 5pm, Fish & Chip Shop next door opens & has one of best Fish & Chips I've had! - crispy batter with tender tasty fish, good portion size for £5.90. For an extra £1, hotel residents can takeaway on a plate. Cozy large room with tv & kettle & tea/coffee/hot choc & bisquits! Breakfast: Really good. Limited cooked option - only hard boiled eggs but impressive non-cooked range: fresh croissants & bread; cereals, fruits, bottled orange juice; tea/coffee & hot choc. Next time, will explore if can have soya milk. Most impressed when they said could take some breakfast away with you as a packed lunch! If leaving before 7.30 am breakfast start, can help yourself to non-cooked breakfast. Improvements: Average quietness, not sure if noise was from tv next door or from downstairs. But became quietest after 11pm. Room and bathroom clean but bit dusty and some spiders in bath. I informed them of rusty towel rail. There was a hook behind bathroom door and cupboard in the room I could use. If I'm ever in the area, I'll stay here again.

Really friendly staff and locals. We asked whether we could watch the football and they switched channels for us. Nice night all round. Slightly limited spirit selection but this is just nitpicking. Recommended

Called in for an evening drink, waiting for the Fish & Chip shop to open conveniently located next door. Run if the mill town pub, average priced drinks for the area.
