We went here for afternoon tea. To say it was a complete disappointment would be an understatement. When we arrived, our table looked lovely. On closer inspection, our table cloth had a dirty mark on and the 2 chairs, not only uncomfortable, but material missing. We were left.... and left... 20 minutes later, our food arrived. It looked amazing, we asked if there were any vegetarian options, and the lady said she wasn't sure, but we had emailed to let them know. About 10/15minutes later plates of sandwiches arrived... eventually our tea and coffee. The sandwiches were lovely, the scones were overcooked and impossible to cut, and rock hard. These were replaced and they were very nice. The cakes were not nice, cold, like they were just out of the fridge, did not feel fresh. They were pretty looking, but a huge disappointment. We had to go and ask for more drinks... water, soft drink, up-sell to us, anything. We were left on our own only seeing anyone when they were replacing things. Felt for the young lady server. It was not her fault. Service was pretty rubbish, nobody there to say bye, thank you, it was all very odd. Would not go back... so much potential, and I hope they get some good management in the hotel. It is surely the first thing you need to get right... to give good service, we had very little.
My family and I had a delicious lunch at The Orwell Hotel today. The fish and chips were lovely and perfectly cooked, and the portion sizes were really generous. When the two waitresses found out it was my sister's birthday they surprised her with a chocolate birthday cake and candle! She was delighted. Thank you so much for a special occasion.
Our last stay was dreadful. Being regular visitors over the last number of years we were amazed how the hotel had deteriorated since July. Breakfast buffet was lukewarm food such as cereals and fruit uncovered. No lunchtime food apart from cake. We were able to have cheese and biscuits for 2 days. The supposedly dinner menu was no better than what you can get in a cafe. As it was a bank holiday we were told only two main meals were available as no one had thought to order. What we did have was awful. Left most of it. We cancelled one night as something had come up at home. We have since cancelled our September booking. Will not be going back. Very sad when we knew we would be leaving for the last time. One day our room was not made up. Had to contact reception for tea etc. until a change of management is made and a dinner menu is more inviting and served hot the Orwell will not be used.
The hotel is very well situated for walking into town or down to the seafront. There is a large car park .The downstairs of the hotel is very nice ,lovely chandeliers. The bedroom we had was a twin room and walking in it was very disappointing. The furniture was all very dated , the bathroom also very dated but It was nice and clean. One of the beds particularly was so noisy each time you moved in bed.nThe room had a kettle and there was plenty of tea bags ,coffee ,and sugars
Convenient location is the only benefit to this hotel. Has a car park.nnRooms have not been modernised since the 70s and are in a disgusting state of repair. Bird poo on the net curtains, sticky floors in the bathrooms and riddled with black spot mould and generally in poor state of repair. One plug in the room. Thread bare carpet. Sound from the downstairs party until midnight.nnBreakfast was chaos with two young people trying their best to serve everyone with zero management or support. I felt very sorry for them. The buffet was empty, and if food was available it was shrivelled and dry, no plates, no cups, no food. And questionable hygiene.nnOur car also got scratched/keyed in the car park overnight.nnOverall I would suggest staying elsewhere if you can.
