The Old Buttermarket

About

You will find The Old Buttermarket in Canterbury within a short stroll of Mercery Lane, Burgate and Canterbury Cathedral.

Story

Step in to discover a traditional pub of unique character, revered for its eclectic range of real ales and its quality pub food, which are served, as they should be, with a generous measure of famous British hospitality.

There has been a public house on this site for over 500 years; a coaching inn called the Black Boy, stood here from the 1600s until 1908. A butter market used to be held in the square outside our pub, and the site is quite historic. Flint pieces in the cellars indicate it may stand on Roman remains and we know that we used to be connected by tunnels to Canterbury Cathedral.

The Old Buttermarket is one of many rare gems in the Nicholson's collection of great British pubs, reputed for their distinctive buildings, intriguing history and vibrant atmosphere.

Great value for money, especially with the current offers. The staff were very attentive, the pub large enough to ensure social distancing, and the home cooked food was very much appreciated. We had a delicious Lancashire Hotpot with Lamb and the Phava beer. Thank you!
Really lovely pub. Nice atmosphere. We sat outside for a drink then went inside for food. Felt forgotten about once inside. No drinks order was taken so we had to order at the bar and food took over an hour to arrive.
Great little pub near the Cathedral. The seating outside the front is perfect for a warm afternoon. The food was really good and they have a few decent vegetarian options too. The prices are similar to London prices but it's well worth it. Great customer service from the staff too.
Had the wild boar & chorizo pie, nothing special and didn't have much flavour. Quite pricey for what you're getting. The table was sticky and not cleaned properly despite the current situation. Would not recommend.
Recently moved to Canterbury... stumbled across this little gem Service very good.. staff attentive.. that’s why I’ll always go back! Good work peeps
