We had some light food/snacks in the bar, which was tasty. The staff were all attentive and friendly, although it was quiet during our visit.

Used to be a safe bet the King's, good food and staff but lately they seem understaffed and on our last visit we asked for a table and just just told to find a seat. After waiting for quite a while no one had come to take a drinks order or brought menus, intact there was only 1 member of staff working and she seemed to be spending all of her time doing something with the till despite us and about 3 other tables waiting for service. We ended up getting up and leaving after about 20mins of waiting, and I'm sure others probably followed us. Shame as being a Melrose resident we have been regular customers for years but this last year things have really deteriorated to the point I doubt I'll go back.

Pretty good bar/hotel all round but the 5 stars was made by the exceptional bartenders.

Horrible Experience! We had a visitor from the states and went for lunch. Our visitors first meal had a large brown hairs sticking out of the food. They took the meal back and brought another which also had a hairs sticking out of and cooked into the potatoes. She was disgusted and I could not touch my food. I sent my plate back having not touched it along with hers. I might add that I also asked for carb free and my plate was delivered covered in potatoes. Our guest eventually ordered chicken tenders and I re-ordered nothing. My partner who is Scottish and has high tolerance for this poor performance just ate his fish and chips. We were ignored for the duration of the meal and had to walk to the bar for a check. When given the bill we were charged for everything. When I said I could not eat my meal the server asked me if there was hair in it. I was speechless. He eventually agreed to remove my meal and gave us an additional 3.00GBP discount. Most reputable clean establishments might require their cooking staff to wear hair nets. This filthy place apparently did not. The fact they even charged us at all was pretty poor. I would not go near this place again nor would I recommend it. We have photos of the food with cooked hair in it as well as copies of receipt should they be needed to substantiate this. Disgusting! The worst part of this was probably the arrogance of the staff. The fist server acknowledged the problems and then ignored us. The second server (male) thought he was beyond reproach. If you run an establishment respect your guests and if there are problems fix them and lose the attitude.
