Recently attended both a private appointment with a consultant, as well an MRI scan, and had an excellent experience with both. The staff are so welcoming and friendly, I didn’t have to wait long for my appointment and it was honestly seamless from start to finish. My consultant was friendly and understanding, and he validated my concerns which was a relief. The MRI process was also smooth, I only had to wait a week after my initial appointment which was such a relief. I’m also terrified of needles but the doctor and nurse were really kind and helped me through it. I really couldn’t recommend The Holly Hospital enough!
From the moment you walk through the hospital doors, you are greeted by staff which easily puts your mind at ease. I had dealings with all the reception staff on duty and they were all of the same friendly and professional standard. I had been admitted for a minor procedure and after the initial completion of paperwork, I was taken to a room designated to me for the day. The lady from reception who accompanied me was again very friendly and answered all my questions along the way. I was showed to my room and was showed the TV, bathroom and safe. She told me to relax and my care assistant would visit shortly. A few moments later, Nisha my care assistant in Cedar Ward entered and immediately made me feel relaxed. She went through some questions and performed some checks. Nisha was very attentive throughout my stay, popping in many times to see how I was and keeping me updated with when I would be called in. She was very professional in her work and most of all, caring to her patients needs. She made my stay all the more enjoyable. I would like to thank all the staff wholeheartedly for giving me such excellent care, especially Nisha. From my experience, I would recommend this hospital to everyone.
My wife was a patient here over the spring. The nursing care for her on the ward, the receptionists and the catering team were brilliant. Janet and Wendy at the reception desk were very helpful and caring. The staff on Ceder ward we’re brilliant. Pedro made my wife laugh, when she was very anxious, Amy Pond, sat with and nursed my wife when back from theatre, acted quickly when became sick and I believe was teaching her some old ‘potters language’ which my wife loved. Raluca Seres was caring, kind and showed patience when the slow discharge process began. Joe was another nurse who helped my wife to get dressed, and made her feel at ease. The staff member who came initially to take my wife to theatre name was Ray was abrupt, rude and told my wife to be quiet at one point. He left and allowed the ward nurse to take her. Once in the theatre room, the theatre nurse was rude towards to the ward nurse who took me to the room, and this made my wife incredibly uncomfortable. My wife was unable to wear her red socks due to swelling, and had to walk to theatre in slippers. This seemed to be a big problem for the theatre nurse, who made a big problem out of it. When my wife asked what the alternative option was, there actually wasn’t one. My wife was moved into the big room post procedure, and was nursed by theatre nurses. Wife was not too well, but was assured that she was fine to be taken back to the ward. The ward nurse came to collect my wife, but agreed she needed to remain under further observations. When the nurse left, the theatre nurse was heard by my wife saying to a male theatre nurse ‘there’s nothing wrong with her. They just can’t be bothered’. My wife was 10ft away. How on earth is this going to make a person feel? A PERSON! My wife remained in this room for 2 hours due to feeling incredibly sick and woozy. 50% of this experience was good. 50% of the experience was not. And unfortunately, the negatives massively outweigh the positives. Thank you to all of the staff who made my wife feel important. Shame on the others for your lack of professionalism.
I would just like to say how incredible your Oncology department is. A truly scary time for me, but at every visit for a consultation or treatment, all staff have been wonderful and very professional, making the experience as bearable as possible. Whenever I have had a medical query, without fail the response has always been to spend the time needed to explain and answer my question fully so that I understood, taking however long was required. All staff have always made me feel relaxed and at ease. The catering staff and food are also fantastic, and the treatment rooms have the most comfortable treatment chairs that I have ever sat in! Thank you.
Dr Tasha & Nurse Sally have both provided the most exemplary level of care to me and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful to have encountered such genuine, caring & soft souls. I came to the Holly after my GP ignored my concerns for months. I was so scared and was honestly expecting the worst but from pre diagnosis all the way until discharge I was provided with the utmost support. Every single concern I had, no matter how small, was adhered to. I was always kept in the loop and every single thing was explained to me thoroughly every step of the way. I kept a lot of this process away from my family as I didn’t want to cause fear but Dr Tasha and Nurse Sally ensured I never felt alone. They were always so positive & kept my morale high. The fact I could feel they were whole heartedly rooting for me is a testament to how quickly I healed. I feel like there aren’t enough words to express my gratitude but I will continue to tell every and anyone who will be willing to listen to me, how exceptional the Holly’s staff members are. All the Doctors, Nurses and receptionists I encountered made me feel important, heard & cared for and for that I’m forever grateful. Please extend my thanks to everyone who had a hand in seeing me through a successful surgery. To Dr Tasha & Nurse Sally, I miss you so much already! Thank you both for being my rock and seeing me through everything. You both went above and beyond your duties & I wish nothing but the best for both of you moving forward. I pray God will bless you beyond your wildest imaginations & give you all your hearts desires. I’ll never forget you.
From the moment I arrived I felt reassured. Janet, lovely friendly receptionist escorted me to my bay and put me at ease. All staff so professional and friendly, I would recommend The Holly to family and friends. Thanks to you all. So appreciated feeling in safe hands in a lovely environment.
So long waited for an appointment to see a neurosurgeon about my spine problems. The appointment was about 2.5 minutes long , and my MRI scan pictures weren't seen neither my comments on them. Rude attitude and complete lack of empathy. The doctor asked me why I was there and what I wanted him to do. I just did not know. I thought after seeing my MRI pictures, he would advise me what my options are, but he said he didn't want to see the pictures. Strange attitude. My peace of advice - if you are an NHS patient, don't bother going in there.
My god what has happened to this hospital. Years ago it was great, superb service. But now it’s just an extension of the NHS. Consultants always late, sometimes up to an hour. Incorrect diagnosis. Brain tumour patients forgotten and not dealt with in a timely manner. Diagnostics booking reception, unprofessional, forgetful with no regards to urgency. You have to continuously chase them. But quick enough to send a large bill.
Worst hospital I’ve ever seen ! I was scheduled for a throat surgery here. They asked me to urgently visit them 1 week before the surgery for pre-assessment tests including blood and covid. I had to change my schedule at the last minute to arrange that because of the mentioned urgency. Then, a couple of days later, I got a call from the pre-assessment nurse Jackie saying that they cannot make my operation because it’s outside the scope of the hospital. This was told 2 days before the operation after I took leaves from the work, arranged 3 weeks recovery time and everything. You should have made the necessary checks before accepting the operation in the first place. I don’t know about their outpatient services, I would definitely not suggest going there for a more serious condition though. Obviously, they don’t have skills to handle complex cases.
Overall the care I received at The Holly for day case surgery borderline OK. My consultant surgeon Mr Sabu Jacob and anaesthetist were fantastic and made me feel like I was in safe hands, however if it were not for them I'm not sure I'd have felt this way. Aspects of the hospital, support staff, admin and organization need real improvement. Some of these could have very dangerous consequences: 1. Pre surgery questionnaire. I filled this out and submitted it, I also got an email confirming the hospital had read it. There were important notes in this for a heart condition I have which have implications for anaesthesia so I called up the admissions team to advise this. The gentleman I spoke to said it was fine and it would be flagged to the right people. The following week I had not heard anything so I called again, the lady said they could not locate the questionnaire and asked me to re-do it all again. This also caused urgency with then getting me in for an ECG as my surgery was only 2 days away. 2. Due to my heart condition I was booked in for a pre surgery ECG. After waiting for my appointment I was called in by the nurse who was prepping to take my blood. I piped up and said I'm here for an ECG not bloods! Had I not said anything I'd have had my blood taken! 3. On the day of my day case surgery I was admitted to a room which contained only a chair and no bed, I was told I would not need one. At first I accepted this without thinking, but then questioned it as I could not understand how the consultant would examine me pre surgery and how on earth I'd be comfortable/safe after surgery just sat in a chair especially as I had a spinal anaesthesia and was totally immobile and numb from the waist down!. It transpired I did indeed need a bed and I was moved rooms this then caused more confusion down the line as the paperwork had the wrong room. I cannot understand how I was ever booked in a room with no bed. The lady who showed me to the room who said I'd only need the chair even read the procedure I was having to me, alarm bells didn't ring to her that this didn't make sense. It shouldn't have been down to me to question this and have it corrected. 4. Staff could not locate my blood results. This delayed my surgery on the day and hours was spent trying to find them. It turned out they were in my folder all along and the nurse just didn't look in the folder properly! 5. Post surgery I was in recovery where there was another lady next to me also called Samantha. This caused confusion multiple times, they actually gave the lady next to me the update on how my surgery went and they nearly took her out of recovery to my room as the porter went to the wrong Samantha only after starting to move her bed did the nurse who had called the porter realise he was moving the wrong patient!. Staff just called out "Samantha" and immediately went to whoever called out first and didn't confirm via any other method they were with the right patient. Surely staff should be checking they have the right patient by surname or DOB, this could have been extremely dangerous. 6. Whilst the staff I had contact with were polite, the man next to me in recovery wasn't so fortunate. I overheard him advising one of the nurses he was in a lot of pain, to which she responded "of course you are you've just had surgery" in a very condescending tone. Poor man! 7. Post surgery a lot of staff did not read my notes and assumed I had had a general anaesthesia when I had had a spinal so I was totally immobile and numb from the waist down. I was asked numerous times to move, roll over etc to which I had to keep advising I couldn't as I had had a spinal! Surely nurses should be reading my notes or having proper handovers! 8. Related to the above the porters who moved my bed back to my room from surgery were not aware I had had a spinal anaesthesia and asked me to scoot from the recovery bed onto the bed in the room - it was literally impossible for me to do this. My husband actually had to step in and help them move me across.
