We had a lovely pre-holiday dinner at The Flag Inn, the restaurant is really cosy and has lots of character. We were sat in the dining room to the right as you enter, this has pretty floral décor and reminded me a little of a living room. The décor is nicer and more characterful than when the previous owners were operating this venue.nnThe food was lovely as well, I had Garlic & Parsley King Prawns for my starter. This dish was quite oily, however this went nicely with the toasted sourdough bread which worked well to soak this up. For my main I tried the prime Cornish Skate Wing which was tender and mildly sweet. It was fairly large with a lot of flesh and crispy edges, it was garnished with lemon, watercress and a lovely homemade tartare sauce.nnThis was accompanied by chips, the mushy peas were an additional £2.95. The chips were nice, however could have been chunkier and perhaps triple fried. The mushy peas were nice as well though could have been included to make the dish better value for money.nnTo drink I had a Coke and my friend had the cola which was on draught. At the time of visiting there weren’t many cocktails available, however this has since been improved with an extensive drinks menu which features 16 cocktails as well as a smaller selection of mocktails.nnMy friend ordered the Garlic, Mozzarella & Parsley Ciabatta to start and the Megamix Sunday Roast for their main. This looked fantastic and came with beef, turkey, pork, a pig in blanket, sausage meat, sage and apricot stuffing and double Yorkshire Pudding. Alongside this it was served with roast potatoes, a jug of gravy and seasonal vegetables. The dish size was fairly generous and my friend struggled to finish everything.nnThe desserts looked very nice as well, we were too well fed to try this though gladly would have if we had space. The service was excellent and our waiter was really attentive and helped me sign up to their Loyalty Club. This gives you your own loyalty card and offers 5p in points for every £1 spent which can be used at any of their venues currently seven venues across Essex. This can then be spent on any food and drink at any time up to £100.nnI wouldn’t hesitate to return here, we are booked in for Father’s Day. It is nice to finally have a restaurant that we can be proud to call our local.
Hands down, it’s a beautiful pub. It’s been renovated wonderfully. Perfect place for get togethers. There’s a car park at the back with outside seating at the front and rear.nMenu has solid varied selection of choices. Food was cooked beautifully. Quality ingredients. A little under seasoned for my tastes. Batter on onion rings and cod, light and crisp.nCustomer service is poor. The restaurant was half empty. We had a reservation for 12:45 and arrived at 12:30. We asked if we could be sat earlier. There was a lot of faffing about and waiting around. We were sat at the table closest to the open kitchen. The cooking smells were very strong. I told the server I’m pregnant and asked if we could be sat elsewhere - perhaps a little further back and was told “no - they were fully booked until the time”. The time? What time? My issue was he didn’t even try. And I know this because I was watching him the whole time. There were A LOT of empty tables. When I asked to sit outside, I was told I didn’t need a reservation and to order at the bar. He could’ve told me this at the beginning, and saved me some time. If you sit outside, you order and pay. There are no table numbers. You give your name for the order. And you’re pretty much ignored once you get your food.
A lovely Fathers Day afternoon spent at The Flag. Food was delicious, service was speedy & the decor was outstanding. Would definitely recommend & will be returning soon!
I’ve graded this a 4 star but it’s boarder line.nService was slow. Food good, but not exceptional.nGenerally over priced but all pubs seem to be today!!nGreat outside areasnNote that some tables had high chairs/bar stools not great for some patronsnNice decor, very clean and spacious
I went to The Flag tonight with my friend. Food was really good, took a bit of time to come out considering there wasn’t many people in there. Staff could also make sure they check on people outside more.nCannot fault the food. We both had the drippy burger which was amazing!nChocolate brownie was also lovely. The cheesecake was good but more of a mouse with biscuit crumbs on the bottom rather than set. Beautiful white choc ice cream!
