Stratford Butterfly Farm

Story

Stratford Butterfly Farm is a visitor attraction in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. A leafy tropical environment is simulated inside large greenhouses. There are numerous free flying butterflies, a few free flying birds, a pool containing fish, and running water. There are also insects and spiders living in glass displays.DesignStratford Butterfly Farm consists of three main areas:Caterpillar Room which houses caterpillars, pupaes, eggs and specialist plants for butterfly breeding. This is the large walk through glasshouse.Insect City houses the more exotic insects, such as beetles, praying mantis, stick insects and giant millipedes. The insects are all behind glass and above your head is a glass confinement of leaf cutter ants. A section in insect city is called 'mini beast' and has snails and crabs.Arachnoland houses over 15 species of spider from black widows to tarantulas. They also have the world's largest spider species, the Goliath birdeater. Arachnoland also includes a collection of scorpions including Imperial Scorpions that glow in the dark. Once again these are all behind glass.HistoryStratford Butterfly Farm was opened by David Bellamy in 1985 and it celebrated its 25th anniversary on 24 July 2010.On 3 June 2002 part of a glass butterfly nursery that was used for breeding rare and exotic butterflies was destroyed in a fire. A firework from a jubilee firework display is thought to have landed in an empty plastic flower pot next to the greenhouse and started the fire. About 90 exotic butterflies were in the nursery at the time and the majority were saved; however, special exotic plants that were used for butterfly breeding were destroyed by the fire.

Absolutely amazing! One of the few places that feels like they are doing this more for the awareness than the money. A lot of animals to see - Butterflies, Stick Insects and Iguanas are just a few of them.nnStaff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Animals seem very well cared for. Would definitely come here again.nnMy mum said she would definitely buy a season ticket if we lived closer.nnEdit: We went around again after finding out you are allowed to. Turns out prudence Green Iguana was having a wonder. I will attach some pictures I took.
Such a fantastic place! Haven't been for 10 years as live so far away, had a holiday nearby so stopped here on the way home. Just wow! Beautiful butterflies and other insects and creatures. Stratford is a beautiful place too for when you're finished. Well worth a visit, very reasonably priced too.
Fascinating place. Lots of beautiful butterflies flying around you as you venture through the rooms. Great for photographing some of the tropical varieties. Watch out for the Iguanas who also live around the pools. Well worth a visit particularly on a day when the weather is not kind for other activities.
Lovely place to have a look at butterflies and more actually. They have fish and also small insects. Plus iguanas.nnIt's humid and warm, obviously in the butterfly area but there is plenty of hooks to hang your coat on prior to entering the butterfly area.nnThis is not the first butterfly farm I've been to, and although seeing these butterfly in real life is so great it's a substitute that is pretty good.
Excellent set of greenhouses with a broad range of free flying butterflies, accompanied by cases of reptiles and other insects. Well worth a detour across the river from Stratford town centre - it’s close to the old tram bridge and not too far from some of the major long stay car parks. There is a well-stocked gift shop and staff are friendly and welcoming.
