This is a very honest review. If you are physically healthy and in decent shape, don’t want to break the bank, is traveling light and alone, this hotel is perfect for you. There is no elevator, no help with luggage, no AC. I stayed here for 8 nights with my teenager daughter. Our room was on the 3rd floor, I had to bring my 50lbs suitcase all the way up we were traveling light we shared a spring mattress double bed, it was uncomfortable. The bathroom is really small and you can’t really wash your face properly because the sink is weirdly installed. However, we had a pretty view from the window. Now, the location is perfect. The area offers great restaurants with fair prices and a giant train station that takes you practically everywhere in England. In short, this hotel is not suitable for elderly, people out of shape, children under 4, people traveling with lots of luggage and people with back problems.
The Shakespeare Hotel near Paddington Station is comically awful. The halls smelled like a dirty jock strap, the room was stuffy, and there was no airflow since we were in the basement. The underground rumbled every few minutes except between 1am and 430am, the walls were paper thin and we could hear neighbours showering and talking, and the stairs were really narrow and steep. My sister was trying to find a cute boutique hotel, and based on the price, thought that this was one of them. The decor hadn't been updated since the nineties, which could be cute but was not. It was just kind of worn out. The staff were all really rude, except for one charming French guy. They're was a sign saying the tap water wasn't potable, and a crabby staff member said we could brush our teeth with it if we didn't swallow. There is a communal drinking water tap in a common room on the main floor. The bed was saggy. Lots of rooms did not have an en suite. Ours did, and the ceiling was mouldy. I'm not a picky person, but this place sucked for the price. It would make a fantastic cheap hostel. DO NOT come here if you have any accessibility issues/needs.
The Shakespeare Hotel was lovely. The lounge area in the reception room was so beautiful. The reception staff at check in was outstanding!! The young man offered to carry up my suitcase and he bolted up the steps, bag on shoulder, effortlessly! On another day the wonderful desk staff gave me simple and concise transit directions to Gatwick Airport. I so appreciated this. My only criticism is about the reception staff at check out. There were two staff I had never encountered before. I inquired if one of them could assist me with bringing my bag down the stairs. The younger man gave me a very quick and emphatic “No” as a response. A slight disappointment at the end of a very lovely stay.
A very good location for Paddington Station. But the downsides outway the good. Not modern. Narrow stairs. No lift. Luckily, you could leave bags downstairs in safe area. No A/C. It was a very warm night. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was a nice English cooked breakfast. I wouldn't stay here again. Rooms: Small single room. TV and small fridge. Older furniture.
The staff are very nice however did not let us know that they had switched our rooms. We booked a 3 person room, ended up with one single room and one double, both EXTREMELY small. Barely enough room to fit two people and suitcases. The bathroom is small and the hot water barely works. The location is great, however rooms are very warm with out ac. Plus no lift, so extremely difficult to lug suitcases up very narrow stair wells don’t come here if you have large checked bag
I stayed solo at this hotel for 2 nights. For the price it was what I excepted, a nice place to sleep and rest the. Go out and explore. It’s close to subway and train station so very easy to get around. Staff was very friendly. Picture is from the street the hotel is located.Rooms: 5/5
We were a group of 5 friends staying at the hotel for 2 nights. The hotel has no stairs as many have mentioned but we were prepared for that. The room was very small, just 5 beds aligned as if we were in boarding school. There was barely any space for the suitcases - thankfully we had 3 suitcases instead of 3. Either the bed frame or the mattress in some beds were too weak and old. The blow dryer stopped working after some time of my friend using it for unknown reasons. The bathroom… It was very small- tiny even. There wasn’t any complimentary shower gel or shampoo, which we didn't mind honestly, but in the shower there was a soap dispenser who my friend tried to use but she said it looked disgusting and stank, so the rest of us didn’t even try. Thank god we only stated there for 2 nights. When we arrived to our room, the heater was on and it was too hot, thankfully the window could open a bit. Another thing to mention, the receptionist failed to give us the correct directions to our room. So imagine us with heavy luggage and backpacks just going up and down the stairs trying to find the room. Let me clear this up so you want have to endure this. The hotel consists of 3 connected buildings, and they only connect at the ground floor, and I believe 1st and 4th floor. Facing the reception, the left set of stairs leads to rooms 111,112, 211 etc. the right set of stairs leads to 141,142 etc. The receptionist could have told us to go right and I wouldn’t have to complain about it here. The location was great, very close to many bust stations and Paddington station. That being said, the building would shake everytime a train passed. We stayed for 2 nights so all of this could he tolerated. But I wouldn’t stay there again. It’s very cheap, but maybe do a little more research and you’ll find a better offer.
Visited London with family July 2024. It is rare to find comfortable rooms to accommodate whole family especially during Wimbledon in London. Shakespeare htl is a gem in the centre of London! Location is superb next to Paddington station with fast and access from and to Heathrow. Excellently connected by tube and buses all landmarks of London can be easily reached. The hotel itself, although a bit old, was perfect for our needs. Room was spacious and could accommodate four adults, well oriented looking at Norfolk square. The staff has been very helpful and the service excellent. We really enjoyed having breakfast at the hotel with great variety and option of selecting typical English flavours. The canteen staff were on top of everything while satisfied all our requests. For any future visits to London, Shakespeare will be our #1 option.
All the staff was very good. The rooms are clean and beds comfortable. Great location. The area is pretty safe, but sketchy. Beware, no AC and no lift. Bathroom in room is small. Above subway tube so low rumble, bring earplugs. Great value if prepared for tradeoffs. Walkability: Not very far from buckingham palace.
If i could leave zero stars I would. Tl;dr there are rats and thehousekeeping sucks. I stayed here last year with no problems but this year has been awful. The housekeeping staff barely cleaned the room of at all and when we requested a new set of bedding after a spilled soda. They did nothing. Left the bedding on the floor thinking that was an obvious sign. They just left the bed mashed. When we went down for bedding all the clerk could find wasa sheet. Next day, still just a sheet. Terrible! But the worst wasI left a packet of biscuits out while we were away, came back to find them eaten by rodents probably rats. I'm so glad this is my last night here. I will never be back. The location is great but this place is disgusting!
