Sept 24. In June 24 my 18 month old rescue cat was seen by a vet as he has juvenile gingivitis. I was advised it would be £1200 to extract all his teeth, and I said I knew they could receive direct from the insurance when asked if I could pay for it, and was told there was an admin fee for that. When paying for that consultation I said I would book when I had recovered from knee surgery and asked the receptionist about direct payment from the insurance due to the fact it was a large amount. I was told I would have to pay a £40 admin fee which I said I was happy with and told her that is what I needed to do. Sept 2024 I my cat was booked for surgery, new vet looked and said it would be better to scale and clean out gums to get rid of gingivitis, I expressed my concern about not getting rid of the gingivitis and my cat having to go through it again, vet replied that it would be good to give it a chance to clear it as he was so young. So he went into surgery and had 8 teeth removed where the bone was being reabsorbed and the gums cleaned. Collecting him after surgery they asked me to pay the £900+ bill, so I said the insurance was paying direct…. But apparently nobody asked for it to be authorised, nobody knew anything about me asking if it could be paid direct from insurance and I had to pay now. I explained that everyone I spoke to I had asked and talked about it being paid direct, but they kept repeating that it was not authorised. They went ask the practice manager and said no it would not be authorised. The vet nurse/receptionist asked me, in front of a packed waiting room if I had the money to pay the bill. She then told me that my insurers would not pay the bill because it was dental and they don’t pay for that. Which is totally incorrect. To say they were quite rude, insensitive and aggressively defensive was an understatement. I was not rude and kept calm.nnI ended up paying the whole bill on a credit in two halves, my cat still has very inflamed gums with gingivitis that has not abated on 10 day check up. He will need the rest of his teeth removed to totally clear the disease. I will be taking him to another vets to continue his treatment.nThe Manager/Director would not speak to me directly but only through junior staff.nnI don’t think I’ve ever seen the same vet twice in the five years I’ve been with the practice. I was told they’ve just taken on a permanent vet and have used locums all the time. The receptionist I spoke to is also no longer there. Staff turnover being high does not encourage trust.
Absolutely amazing, very sincere & professional staff throughout the organisation. Very reassuring & refreshing to find helpful & pleasant people in what can be a very testing environment
IF YOUR DOG SUFFERS FROM EPILEPSY OR SEIZURES DO NOT BRING THEM HERE. SEEK OUT A NEUROLOGIST.nnWe had been coming to Seaham vets for years with our two dogs. They were amazing for the first few years but got worse over time.nnOur Springer Spaniel was diagnosed with epilepsy at the beginning of this year. We never had any consistency from Seaham. It was always a locum vet with a different opinion on how to tackle her epilepsy that often contradicted the other vet’s advice.nnOur Springer had a bad set of cluster grandmals and was admitted to Seaham, where she seized all day and went into status epilepticus.nnThe American / Canadian locum vet gave us a phone call to say she had reached the limit of what she could do and referred us to Moorview as somewhere more specialised in dealing with seizures, but she later cancelled this referral after calling us again to say she couldn’t stop the seizures and we would need to consider euthanising our girl who is only four, which was devastating and a complete shock to us.nnWe then got a phone call to tell us she is stable and we can collect her at 6pm which we did with joy but sadly she had another seizure and at this point she told us that in her professional opinion she didn’t believe it was epilepsy and she believed it was a structural abnormality like a brain tumour, and that it would cost thousands to do a scan and again, we should consider euthanasia.nnWe could not believe what we were hearing and asked about taking her to Moorview. She told us in her opinion it was pointless; we would spend thousands and be in the exact same position in 24 hours. She seemed to be trying her hardest to convince us to put her to sleep probably to cover her back.nnWe had to try for our girl’s sake and we took her to Moorview, who admitted our Springer quickly and were shocked that Seaham were even considering putting her down. We told them what she had said and they were baffled.nnShe told us that she had spoke to Moorview and they told her we can bring our Springer through but there is not much they can do differently than what she had tried and they would just be stabilising and not treating her. However, the member of staff she spoke to In Moorview explained he said no such thing, he did not believe it to be anything other than epilepsy and she will be fine. He also couldn’t understand why she had cancelled the referral earlier in the day and said we had been lucky to get the last place of the evening. She was admitted for several days, stabilised, placed into the care of a neurologist and put on a new treatment regime of medication.nnThat was over two months ago and we have a happy, healthy Springer running around with a ball in her mouth back home with us.nnTo add to this horrendous situation, when we got our itemised bill we saw we had been ridiculously over charged:nWe were charged for the telephone call to tell us she needs putting down.nWe were charged because she was out of her depth and rang Moorview for advice I have no idea why that was billed to usnWe were charged when we brought her to Seaham and she began having a seizure in front of the so-called vet who looked genuinely panic-stricken and called for a nurse’s help: the charge reads ‘emergency consult’ and then a duplicate charge of ‘emergency consult - second nurse’. A total of over £600 to be in for the day which only made her worse. We asked repeatedly to collect her during the day but they refused saying she wasn’t safe to travel after the seizures, however conveniently when they finally allowed us to collect her at closing time and she had a further grand mal they were fine for us to drive her half an hour away to the hospital when they had racked up a full day of charges.nnPlease, always get a second opinion about your dog if you are not happy with the vet’s advice.nWe saved our girl from being put down needlessly due to a locum vet’s incompetence.nn95% of the staff are lovely and caring. Please Seaham, check your locum vets’ competency in the future.
